Hello

I bought this new HP laptop approx. 6 weeks ago with Windows 8 pre-installed which gave me problems from day 1. It also had Norton Internet Security pre-installed. From the start it had loads of pop ups and malware, I don't know where they came from as I don't visit strange sites plus it had Norton running. After removing Norton, installing Kaspersky Internet Security, running Anti-MalwareBytes and cleaning up the infections things seemed to get back to normal.

Lately I started getting minidump errors with a blue screen when I switch on the laptop in the morning, and a persistent loss of signal from the wireless card.

I ran Blue Screen View and got details about DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, see attached files.

Looking at the Blue Screen View details I see dates going back to 2012, is that normal seeing as I only just bought this computer which was supposed to be brand new?

Any help appreciated.

Thank you

:welcome: to the Bleeping Computer forum.

Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info needed.

:step1: Upload the actual crash dump files.

You will find the crash dump files inside C:\Windows\Minidump folder. To copy the dumps, disable "User Account Control" first. Otherwise you may receive a permission error. After disabling UAC, copy and zip most recent three or more dumps to a single file. Either attach the zip with next reply using "More reply options --> Attach files" or use a free file hosting site.

:step2: Publish a snapshot of your system using Speccy.

"Speccy" is a free tool which can list the hardware specs, temperature status, installed Windows updates, HDD SMART info etc of your system. Please read the below tutorial to know how to use "Speccy" to collect system info.

Don't paste the output displayed by "Speccy" here. Instead paste the web link it displays.

:step3: Minitoolbox log.

"Minitoolbox" can list all the installed programs as well as event log errors in your system. Download "Minitoolbox" from the below link.

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.
  • List last 10 Event viewer errors
  • List installed program
  • List users, partition and memory size
  • List Minidumps
  • Now click "Go" and post the output displayed in next reply.

Also please post the exact model number of your laptop (ie,  HP Pavilion G6-2301AX ).

    Hi

Your BSOD issue seems to be caused by  netr28x.sys , Ralink Wireless adapter driver.

Either the wireless driver is buggy or there is a hardware fault with it. This will also explain the wireless signal loose you are experience. Our first step should be nothing but updating the driver. But unfortunately, there is no driver update listed on the HP support site. Please follow the below steps to collect the "Hardware ID" of your WiFi card.

     1. Press Win key and R together to open RUN dialogue.

     2. Type Msinfo32.exe and press "Enter". System information tool will appear

     3. Choose File --> Save and attach it with the next reply.

    HI

Unfortunately the current version of Ralink driver installed in your system seems to be the latest one available  :( . A quick Google search shows "Ralink" drivers are known to be buggy and not working properly with Windows 8 for a lot of people.

Let us try changing some settings and hope it helps.

:step1: Change power plan to "Balanced".

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/778-power-plan-settings-change.html (instructions are for Windows 7 but the same applies to Win 8 ).

:step2: Open device manager and right click on the Ralink (Mediatek) Wireless adapter and choose properties.

          Like this :

          network-adapters-properties.jpg

Now navigate to the "Power management" tab and uncheck  “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power“.

Reboot the system when completed. Report whether it helps.

Thanks, I have done as you suggested and will report back.

I was thinking though, this computer is 6 weeks old and under warranty.....can I not demand from HP that they plain replace the Wifi card and relative driver with one that works correctly?

    Hi

If the above workaround can't solve the issue, you should definitely contact HP support. They will have an updated driver and they are responsible to fix it.

    Hi

I just came back to report that unfortunately the workaround didn't fix the issue, although I do get the errors less frequently.

A couple of days ago HP installed a lot of updates also to do with the BIOS, but that didn't fix the issue either.

At this point I will return the computer to HP and demand that they honor the 2 year warranty by either repairing/fixing what needs fixing or by replacing the machine. :smash:

Thanks for your help, it was much appreciated :thumbsup2:
