First, my thanks in advance to any who may help with the trouble my laptop is serving up to me.  Below please find what I hope will be a thorough report on the matter. If you need anything further, please LMK, as I will regularly check back for your advice.

  1. Description of the problem
  2. List of what I've already done to ID source and correct trouble
  3. Link to the Speccy URL of system specs
  4. Cut and paste of results of MiniToolBox scan

Description:  BSOD after computer is left idle (no key strokes) for approx. 15 minutes.  If left alone for longer period of time, system will automatically shut down and restart.

First sign of trouble, groggy browser with load times for common pages. Browser fails to respond to command to close. Task manager (for forced shutdown) slow to open. One TM open, request to "restart computer" requires approx 2-3 minutes to begin. Sometimes works, but more often.... BSOD pops up.  Important detail: This only happens when computer idle.

Key Detail 1: In preparation for full-system failure, I backed up and deleted all files in My Documents folder.   Several Javascript files have since appeared.

Key Detail 2:  I'm running LastPass password management in my browsers and Bombgar Remote Support may be running in the background.

Key Detail 3: When this issue occurs, I've noticed that the wireless internet connection is often slow to be reestablished during system resume.

List of Corrective Efforts To Date:

  1. All updates from Microsoft downloaded and installed
  2. Following scans completed with no reports of issues
    1. Safe mode full system scan by MS Security Essentials
    2. Safe mode full system scan by Malware Bytes
    3. Safe mode full system scan by a-Squared anti-malware
    4. Regular mode full system scan of Rogue Killer scan
  3. BIOS checked and updated
  4. Video drivers checked for update. None required.
  5. Wireless adapter driver checked for update. None required.
  6. Disc check and disc scan both run with no reported faults in HDD

:welcome: to the forum mate.

SMART data collected by Speccy shows your hard drive is slowly failing.

C5 Current Pending Sector Count: 200 (199) Data 0000000014
C6 Uncorrectable Sector Count: 100 (253) Data 0000000000

There is at least 14 bad sectors in the HDD  which means the disk's condition is fatal. I would replace the drive as soon as possible. You can run a test with manufacturer's diagnostic tool for confirmation.

Run Western digital data life guard diagnostic from the above link. First run a "short test" with it. If it doesn't detect errors, run the "Extended" test. If either one of the test detects errors, it is better to replace the drive than trying to repair the errors.

Additionally, your CPU seems to be a little over heating.

Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo P8600 @ 2.40GHz: 56 °C

Please clean the system interior, heat sink fins and reapply the thermal compound (if necessary).

Anshad: First my thanks. I am endebted for your analysis.

  1. If I understand correctly, the drive is failing and needs to be replaced. I will run the test you suggest and report back with (expected) confirmation of your finding.
  2. The heat issue is well documented with the Dell Studio XPS laptops. I will look into cooling options as I know that heat is a system-killer.
  3. So no signs of malware or hijackers?  If so, why would this only happen during system idle?

Hi

Even if there are malwares in your system, it will be a waste of time to try cleaning them. Most probably you will need a new drive and hence a clean OS install is necessary. OS in a failing drive will be unstable and might show weird behaviors.

Again, my thanks. I understand your take on what needs doing. Testing underway. Short-Test shows "pass."  Extended-Test in progress. Need 90-mins or so to complete. (Without getting deeply technical, any thoughts to pass on as to why this only happens when system is idle?)

Update: Failed on the Short-Test and Extended-Test.  Short test failed to complete. Extended test delivered a report that the sectors need repair; however, when I attempted, the program stopped and then prompted me to contact WD technical support.

  1. I presume both are expected outcomes, but please confirm.
  2. For sure, I will either replace the drive, or ditch the computer, as I need a reliable machine. May be best to start anew.
  3. Is it possible that the 14-sectors you mention were destroyed by my having to hold the power button to re-start the computer?  If so, this would lead me to believe, there's a process or a corrupt file that's causing the problem.
  4. Lastly, for any who may read this post, why would the machine fail again/again but only do so when idle.  It's almost as if it's trying to enter the sleep state, but failing to do so, then the BSOD process kicks in.

For your continued support (correction: LIFELINE!), my heartfelt thanks as always.

Hi

What your system is experiencing is a combination of software and hardware issues. First one is of course the failing hard drive. Yes, holding down the power button to shutdown a system can damage the hard drive. Every hard drive does have a power off procedure. When a hard drive is working, it's platters are spinning at around 7600 rotations per minute. Also it's head will be constantly reading and writing to the platters. When we normally shutdown a system, hard drive will initiate a power off procedure which will safely stops all the mechanical activities before the system is shutting down. When you forcefully shutdown a system by holding the power button, there is no such power down procedures are initiated and as a result either data corruption or surface damage can happen.

According to the event log, you are experiencing a STOP 0x7A  KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR bugcheck.

Error: (11/01/2013 00:44:29 PM) (Source: BugCheck) (User: )
Description: 0x0000007a (0xfffff6fc40036be0, 0xffffffffc0000185, 0x000000003d173be0, 0xfffff88006d7c000)C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP110113-15678-01

Here is what Microsoft says about this stop code : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff559211(v=vs.85).aspx

  • 0xC000009C, or STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR, typically indicates bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.

  • 0xC000016A, or STATUS_DISK_OPERATION_FAILED, indicates bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.
  • 0xC0000185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR, indicates improper termination or defective cabling on SCSI devices or that two devices are trying to use the same IRQ.

When the system is idle for a long time, it will power down hard drive, monitor etc to save energy. When you press a key on the keyboard, system will try to power up this devices. I guess since your hard drive is faulty, it is failing to resume from the standby mode which leads to a STOP 0x7A bugcheck.

So replacing the drive will solve your BSOD issue.

Anshad: "So replacing the drive will solve your BSOD issue."  Thanks on many levels. Your insight into the trouble, of course, much appreciated. Far more so because I'm a stranger who needed help.  Will play it forward somehow in the future. -StejayVA-
