I've been having BSODs in September due to my GFX card overheating. I changed that and also cleaned a mallware infection.

BUT, since 10 days ago I've started having new BSODs, which are sometimes followed by a system crash on startup.

I have used BlueScreenView to see the minidumps but I seem unable to access them (it says "access is denied") and indeed I cannot even attach them here because when I do, windows says:

"You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission."

I tried to change permissions via properties->security but I seem to be unable to (I used to be able before the BSOD). It seems to have somehow messed up with my user settings (and my FF cookies are gone too).

Where do I start?

Please help if you can!

Hi

Please follow the below steps.

:step1: Upload the actual crash dump files.

You will find the crash dump files inside C:\Windows\Minidump folder. To copy the dumps, disable "User Account Control" first. Otherwise you may receive a permission error. After disabling UAC, copy and zip most recent three or more dumps to a single file. Either attach the zip with next reply using "More reply options --> Attach files" or use a free file hosting site.

:step2: Publish a snapshot of your system using Speccy.

"Speccy" is a free tool which can list the hardware specs, temperature status, installed Windows updates, HDD SMART info etc of your system. Please read the below tutorial to know how to use "Speccy" to collect system info.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Don't paste the output displayed by "Speccy" here. Instead paste the web link it displays.

:step3: Minitoolbox log.

"Minitoolbox" can list all the installed programs as well as event log errors in your system. Download "Minitoolbox" from the below link.

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.
  • List last 10 Event viewer errors

  • List installed program

  • List users, partition and memory size

  • List Minidumps

Now click "Go" and post the output displayed in next reply.

Hi

Your issue seems to be mainly caused by "Rt86win7.sys" ," Realtek Ethernet" adapter driver.

8e95219c 93162618*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for Rt86win7.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for Rt86win7.sys

The driver seems to be very old.

Loaded symbol image file: Rt86win7.sys
    Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\Rt86win7.sys
    Image name: Rt86win7.sys
    Timestamp: Thu Feb 26 14:34:22 2009 (49A65B16)

Please follow the below steps.

:step1: Update LAN driver.

Download and install Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2 Auto Installation Program version 7.075 from the below link.

http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

:step2: Remove remnants of AVG.

There are AVG drivers seems to be active in your system. It may create conflict with other AV programs.

Download and run AVG removal tool to clean the leftovers.

http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/support/avg_remover_stf_x86_2014_4116.exe

:step3: Uninstall Avast.

Event log indicates "Avast antivirus" is not working properly in your system.

Error: (11/01/2013 11:19:31 AM) (Source: Service Control Manager) (User: )
Description: The avast! Antivirus service is marked as an interactive service. However, the system is configured to not allow interactive services. This service may not function properly.

Please uninstall "Avast" completely using "Avast removal tool" from "safe mode".

http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

We recommended "Microsoft Security Essentials" as your main AV for a stable system operation. Get it from the below link.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=5201

:step4: Uninstall SPTD.

"SPTD" is a kernel mode driver used by several virtual drive programs like "Daemon tools" , "Alcohol 120" etc. This driver is known to cause BSOD in Windows 7 and 8. Please uninstall any virtual CD program installed in the system first. Then download and run "SPTD removal tool" from the below link.

http://www.duplexsecure.com/download/SPTDinst-v184-x86.exe

Run the tool and press the "Uninstall" button if it is not grayed out.

Once the issue is resolved, i can recommend other alternative virtual disc softwares which are not problematic.

Please report your findings after following the steps exactly. If the issue continues, upload the new dumps which reflects the changes.

Thanks a lot for the help!

I followed the steps exactly and no BSOD so far. Fingers crossed!

As the BSODs happen once every couple days, I will wait to see if the system is stable now. I will report if something changes but so far it looks good!

Just one thing (it might be irrelevant but I should mention it)

When I rebooted my system and pressed F8 to go to safe mode, instead of presenting me with the regular screen to choose modes, it showed up a screen with only the command prompt, a small green square and the letter N (with a symbol like "~" on top of it).

Then it just hanged up there and I had to reboot manually to go anywhere.

Hi

That is strange. Please try booting to "safe mode" using an alternate method such as using "Msconfig". You will find the detailed instructions by referring "Option two" of the below tutorial.

Thanks!

I managed to go to safe mode after a few tries with F8 (my uneducated guess is that if I press F8 too much, then this crazy green square+N happens)

It looks good stil! Let's hope it stays that way!

Hmm...

I will need to find a virtual disc software that is not daemon tools (is powerISO good?)

Also, would you please recommend another AV program that is stable and is not "Microsoft Security Essentials"?

Again, thanks for everything Mr. Edavana

Hi

MSE is the most stable antivirus program since it is coded by the mighty Microsoft themselves. "Avast" is my second choice but i can't recommend it to you since it is creating issues in your system. What is best to do is keep MSE as the main AV and install "Malwarebytes free" for on demand scanning.  Doing a full system scan with those prgrams at regular intervals is highly effective.

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware//

For virtual CD functionality, i recommend "Total mounter (Free)" or "UltraISO" (Commercial) .

Damn, two days later, again BSODs.

One BSOD crashed my system while multitasking, and then another right after the first one, during windows startup!

The first one produced a minidump, and I am attaching it to this post. The second one didn't, and just prompted me to windows startup repair, which failed to find any errors.

Should I also upload speccy and/or Minitoolbox logs?

Thank you again

Hi

Latest crash dump blames "Memory corruption" as the reason.

BugCheck 4E, {8d, 1cfc1, 510080, c07ecb43}

Probably caused by : memory_corruption ( nt!MmZeroPageThread+504 )

Please run a stress test on the RAM modules using the free tool "Memtest86+". What you need to do is run it for at least eight continues passes. For detailed step by step instructions, please refer the below guide.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

It may take several hours to complete eight passes so wait patiently until it completes or run it over night.

In the meantime, i will look in to the crash dump for possible software issues.

Thanks for your continuing help.

Alright,

I will run Memtest86+ overnight and report the findings here same time tomorrow. I am familiar with the process so I won't have any trouble.

For the record, I had already run Memtest a few days before I posted here and it found nothing (though I am pretty sure I didn't let it complete 8 passes)

EDIT: Another hint that might be useful is that this latest BSOD wiped out all my cookies, so it may (or may not) be related to firefox or something. (Crashes tend to happen when I have many programs running at once and not just 1 or 2, even if these are demanding programs like PC games).

Hi

Once the Memory test completed eight passes, please perform the below steps. There seems to be a number of software issues witch needs to be fixed.

:step1: Uninstall "Dual core optimizer".

This software is meant for Windows XP as it is not optimized for dual core processors. This shouldn't be installed under Windows 7.

:step2: Uninstall Gigabyte bundled softwares.

EasySaver B9.0205.1  (known BSOD issues with Win 7)

     Gigabyte Raid Configurer

These may sometimes create unnecessary issues. Better keep them uninstalled.

:step3: Clean the remnants of Kaspersky.

kl1.sys Tue Sep 1 16:59:07 2009 (4A9D0583)
Kaspersky Unified Driver

Use " Kaspersky Uninstall tool " to remove the leftovers.

http://support.kaspersky.com/common/service.aspx?el=1464

:step4: Update LogMeIn Hamachi.

Current version seems to be a bit outdated.

hamachi.sys Thu Feb 19 16:06:27 2009 (499D362B)
LogMeIn Hamachi Virtual network interface driver

"LogMein" uses a filter driver witch attaches to the Ethernet driver. Since the previous blue screens blamed your LAN driver for crashes, we should either remove or update any driver associated with it. If you are not currently using this software, please uninstall it. Otherwise update it from the below link (remove the older version first).

https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx

:step5: Update Jmicron RAID driver.

Current version seems to be too old.

jraid.sys Tue Nov 4 07:50:23 2008 (490FB167)
JMicron RAID Driver

ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/SATA_Controller/Windows/JMB36X_WinDrv_R1.17.65_WHQL.zip

:step6:  Clean system interior.

Your CPU seems to be clearly overheating which need to be fixed asap.

CPU
AMD Phenom II X4 955: 58 °C
Deneb 45nm Technology

Clean the system interior thoroughly first.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/cleaning-the-inside-of-your-pc/

Then remove the old CPU thermal compound completely and reapply a good quality one like "Arctic Silver".

Wow thanks a lot!

I will do all the software/hardware maintenance stuff right after the memtest. I am confident I can remove and then reapply the thermal paste correctly.

Hello again!

Memtest found no errors after 8+ passes (I stopped it at pass 9). I did all the steps in your last message, cleaned the interior and replaced the thermal paste.

Here's my latest Speccy report: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/E6dqyxeetkh5RykmIVsYr5x

It now says:

CPU
AMD Phenom II X4 955:
37 °C

So I guess the cleaning worked!

My system seems stable now, but I guess I'll have to wait a couple days to really be sure.
