So I got the PRISM virus (ransomware). Just popped up while I was playing Guild Wars 2.
Learned a bit about it and tried to repair. I had two user accounts on my machine and the other one still worked, so I tried running AVG to scan the computer. AVG found nothing unusual. Logging on to my main account brought up PRISM virus screen again.
Various sources online told me to boot in safe mode as a next step. Pressing F8 to enter safe mode (I have Windows Vista) would cause the computer to whirr, spin up, etc but never actually start. If I didn't try to enter safe mode the computer WOULD start.
I found something online that showed me how to enter safe mode without pressing F8 --basically I went into msconfig and pressed the boot tab to enable safe boot at all times. I'm kicking myself for not seeing where this might go...
Now whenever I turn my machine on it automatically tried to boot in safe mode -- and never starts. Oh, it whirrs, spins up, spins down, whatever, but never really enters safe mode.
I tried putting the Vista disc in the optical drive, no dice. Unplugging the cable to the internet, no dice. Nothing.
So, how bad did I just hose myself?
