I have a laptop that was brought back from the field and it has a problem and just boot cycles. The user said the last thing he did was click on a link then his computer shut down and restarted and did the recovery options boot cycle. Safemode is not available.

I have tried running automated repair 20+ times which fails.

Error code on failure is.

Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385

Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385

Problem Signature 03: Unknown

Problem Signature 04: 21199803

Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover

Problem Signature 06: 17

Problem Signature 07: NoRootCause

OS Version 6.1.7600.2.00.256.1

The Startup repair log shows error

Repair Action : System Files integrity check and repair.

Result: Failed. Error Code = 0x490

I have tried fixboot and fixbcd.

I have tried Manually restoring the Registry Hives which did not work.

I have ran Chkdsk /r which shows no errors on hard drive.

I have run SFC /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=d:\windows which shows no errors.

I do have a recovery CD and I am able to boot to that and run recovery tools.

I am at a loss as to what to do next. I believe there is some malware on the computer but unable to boot to safemode to repair. Please Help ASAP.

Thanks,

*UPDATE*

I have run Bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot again and magically it worked this time and the computer was able to startup. I am running malware scans and system file checker again to verify problem is resolved but initial issue is good.
