Hi

I am really hoping somenomne can help me.

I am running XP and whilst i can surf the intenrent ok, my computer comes to a standstill if i try to do any other task.

some of the issues i have are

1. Computer is very slow

2. i cannot click on any media player without computer freezing (not blue screen just actually comes to a stand still)

3. i cannot open any folder or drives without computer freezing,

4.i cannot unrar files without the computer locking up

5. when i do a computer scan  the results show approx 40 files are unable to be scanned

5. My add/remove programs has disappeared

6. i am positive some programs have also been deleted

7. Click on the task bar is a crap shoot - sometimes it works fine others it will freeze my computer

8. Virtually any click on a folder or prgram on my c: or external drives virtually locks up the computer

9 Start up takes 20 odds minutes

10. when i watch a movie the sound is all distorted (vey slow speech)

I have scanned in safe mode using Avast I also scanned using AVG

I have defragmented my machine

I scanned using malware bytes etc however have got nothing

I have tried to system restore which i am unable to , , I have disaballed sytem restore and scanned

I ran chkdsk

I have updated all my drivers

none of the above has made any difference

I use firefox and have virtually no  no adds ons

Would really appreciate any help!

G'day mm790, and a belated Welcome to BC !!!  :welcome:

We seem to have overlooked you.....I will do my best to speed this process up for you.

Download SecurityCheckby Screen317
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Run this for me and copy and paste the result back in your next post......in the meantime I will put my thinking cap on and devise a plan of attack.

lets try a different approach...

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them.
NOTE : You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free (aka MBAM)
Do not install the Free Trial Version at this time .........
* Double-click MBAM -setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to Check for Updates to be so it is current
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Scan, then click Quick Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.
If you are not sure of any items, post the log and ask if it should be removed.
Be sure to reboot the computer after you post the log.

fed up with Windows antics...??....LINUX IS THE ANSWER....I USE LINUX MINT 18.3  EXCLUSIVELY.

Microsoft gives you Windows, Linux gives you the whole house...

It has been said that time heals all wounds. I don't agree. The wounds remain. Time - the mind, protecting its sanity - covers them with some scar tissue and the pain lessens, but it is never gone. Rose Kennedy

You appear to be running more than one AV program.

Please delete one of these.

Avast would maybe be a good choice to keep.......your choice.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Clean.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

edited to request removal of 2nd AV

In red is avast software....this may only be remnants.....but could be sufficient to cause dramas....

 Alwil Software Avast5 AvastSvc.exe
 Alwil Software Avast5 avastUI.exe
 Zone Labs ZoneAlarm zlclient.exe

How to uninstall Avast software using avastclear:
  1. Download avastclear.exe on your desktop
  2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
  3. Open (execute) the uninstall utility
  4. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
  5. Click REMOVE
  6. Restart your computer

Please download Junkware Removal Tool by thisisu to your desktop
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

* Please download  MiniToolBox , and run it.

You only posted a couple of lines, where it should be at least 30 + lines long ......

This may also help Condobloke pick up a few more items -

Thank You -

Thanks for your input as well noknojon

Since deleting AVAST  (i am currently not running a AV)

My media player fires up straight away if i double click (previously it would freeze the computer and the only way i could open a file was by opening VLC then file open and search for file,  Files are playing with good audio , previously distorted

I am also doing some clicking on files and i am able to navigate through my c: drive freely  (previously computer would freeze)

I would appreciate you still looking at my logs, but if you can't find anything we may have indentified the problem.

Also my CPU usage is sitting at 1-2%, previously when Idle it would fluctuate between 10-70%
