I have an issue that I've seen posted on here, but I'm not sure what else to do to try to stop it. The problem is that when I use Google to do a search, I click on any of the results and it just goes to some other search page or random page, mostly Stopzilla or ebay. I have to hit the back button and try three times to get the actual link I was trying to go to. It also happens on other pages sometimes when I click a link, it just goes to some random search page. I have installed and used PestPatrol (Computer Associates), Adaware SE (but it stalls during the registry deep scan), and I just used Spybot. I also have Trend Micro's Office Scan Corporate Edition virus protection on my laptop since it's my company computer. It doesn't find any viruses and the other programs have found and deleted some spyware, but the problem still persists. I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Here is my HijackThis log:

If you didn't add next entry yourself in your trusted zone, check it as well:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.infoportal

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

I also just did some tests, and am happy to report that my Google searches seem to be working without being redirected (so far), and my Adaware scan ran all the way through for the first time.

Well, in that case, it looks like we solved it.
Don't forget to delete the files I mentioned in my previous reply, because we crossed eachother posts here. :flowers:

Miekiemoes,
Thanks for all your help. I did delete the files you mentioned. By the way, what do those do to my computer? I must say I should have come to this forum when the problems first started, but I guess this is how I learn. I really do appreciate the quick responses and the fact that you obviously know what you are doing. (More than I can say for my companies help desk!)

Thanks again,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Well, you were dealing with a DNS hijacker and that explains why you got redirected to other pages instead of Google.
Also read here for more info:
http://www.avira.com/en/threats/section/fu...tr_pipas.a.html

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Also visit this Free Online Scanner for PC Health and Safety and Microsoft Security At Home for tips to Protect your Pc, Protect yourself and Protect your Family.

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
