The file in question relates to Private Tunnel VPN. I've tried to delete in safe mode but still no good. Any suggestions really appreciated.

PS - It's a JSON file if that helps.

Have you tried to uninstall the program in the control panel under uninstall a program?

There's nothing for private tunnel there. Revo uninstaller doesn't show anything either.

Please download Autoruns.

Open Downloads in your browser and click on the Autoruns download.

Click on Run to initiate the installation.

When Autoruns loads you will see an image similar to the one below.

There will be a Text icon on the desktop titled AutoRuns, click on it to open the log.

Copy the log and paste it in your next post.

Please post the log in this topic.  I make it a practice to not download anything to this computer without knowing exactly what I'm getting.  Nothing personal implied.

I'm going to have to pass on this then. It's been saying saving post for over 30 minutes without completing. I've also deleted the attachment from my previous post.

PS - Does anyone know the maximum amount of text per BC post? My autoruns log is 182k and I couldn't copy and paste it. It just said 'saving post' for ages.

Where is the file located inside of folder?

You can use the Avast Removal tool to delete the item.

The instructions below assume that the item in question is in the program files you can delete if the file is in another location.

Also Autoruns is a viable option here as well you can look for anything related to the VPN software and un-tick it although this will not delete the file just stop it from loading with windows.

Using the Avast Removal Tool for removing stubborn hard to remove files................

  •     Download aswclear.exe on your desktop
  •     http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe
  •     Start Windows in Safe Mode
  •     Open (execute) the uninstall utility( Vista Win 7 User's Need to Right Click and Run as Admin.)
  •     Locate the file or folder which you would like to remove/delete
  •     To Have avast delete the folder you can specify which folder needs deletion by hitting the search button from within the Avast Removal Utility. [...]
  •     Go to the C: Drive then Locate the Folder in program files.
  •     Left Click the Private Tunnel VPN.
  •     Select OK
  •     Select Un install from within the avast removal tool
  •     Select Yes To the Prompt
  •     Allow confirmation of Deleted files.
  •     X out of the Avast Un install Utility
  •     Follow the Prompt To Reboot
  •     (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)

Thanks a lot InadequateInfinity - it worked. I don't know if the file was anything sinister - Avast and Malwarebytes said it was clean. I'm glad it's gone though.
