Hi,

My mom said she tried to download words with friends (not sure from where) but now there's a handful of programs on the computer now - Advanced System Pro, Reg Clean Pro (systweak), My PC Backup, Search Protect by conduit, and Wise Convert.

I did uninstall wajamupdaterV3 from the control panel. I saw that all of the programs have an uninstall except Search Protect. Can they be completely deleted using the uninstall? The computer is running XP 32bit with Norton and Malwarebytes but I haven't ran either.

Thank You

Hi baseballfan00,

Try running the uninstallers for these programs first. Then we can probably clean up the leftovers after by running a few programs, starting with MBAM:

Please open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
  • Post the log back here.

Hi baseballfan00,

You are very welcome. Good, that scan took out a lot, lets run a few more to clear up. Some of these may take a long time, so please be patient.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • Click on the Clean button.
  • Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
  • Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

--------

thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

--------

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

--------

Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Hi xXToffeeXx,

I ran all the scans successfully except Security Check. I turned Norton back on and it blocked the download, I cleared the entry, disabled the antivirus & firewall, downloaded & ran it but it said unsupported operating system.  I ran the Junkware Removal tool twice as I didn't think it finished and it overwrote the first log file.  There were maybe 6 or 7 registry keys in the first log.

Also, a couple months ago Malwarebytes found Trojan.Tracur.s, which was removed.  I'm not sure by which program, when Mbam found it, Norton analzyed it and both said it was quarantined and deleted.  One other problem the computer had maybe 3 or 4 times a month was Norton's firewall wouldn't turn on automatically at start up.  I don't remember if it started before or after the Trojan was found. Here's the logs

Hi baseballfan00,

Reboot your computer, right-click on Security Check again and click run as administrator. See if it work like that, but if not I will get you to run another scan which gives me the information I need. No problems about JRT, I think AdwCleaner got most of what JRT would get anyway.

Win32/Tracur is a family of trojans that redirect web search queries to malicious URLs, download and run and other files, including other malware, and allow backdoor access and remote control. I see no signs of it, and I imagine Norton had dealt with it like what it said. Most of what the scans removed was adware, toolbars, and PUPs (potentially unwanted program) which are not really dangerous, just annoying and can redirect searches and show advertisements. If this continues with Norton, then you may want to uninstall and then reinstall, but if you get an error code then note it down, and I'll have a look.

xXToffeeXx~

Hi xXToffeeXx,

I don't have the administrator password and they can't find it right now (not my comp).  Also, when running the JRT both times, there were two errors, access denied for hkey_classes_root/.swf and hkey_local_machine/software/classes/.sfw

Hi baseballfan00,

Hi xXToffeeXx,

I don't have the administrator password and they can't find it right now (not my comp).  Also, when running the JRT both times, there were two errors, access denied for hkey_classes_root/.swf and hkey_local_machine/software/classes/.sfw

Access denied was probably because of not running as administrator, I could script them away if wanted, but it's probably not needed.

Uninstall these program from add and remove programs in the control panel:

Ad-Aware - conflicts with Norton as it is an antivirus in it's own
Java™ 6 Update 11  - Out-dated version of Java, only update if you need Java as it provides a high security risk to your computer which malware use.
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7

Adobe Reader 8 - Reinstall with the latest version

How is the computer running, and any problems?

Hi xXToffeexX,

I uninstalled those programs and updated Adobe. The computer is running fine now. Thanks again for all your help.

Hi baseballfan00,

I'm glad to hear that the computer is running fine. You are most welcome, but please tell your mom to only download from the main sites wherever possible and to look for extras which are being installed. This is quite a good topic to keeping a computer clean and is written by site founder and admin, Lawrence Abrams.

Hi xXToffeeXx,

I'll let my mom know.  The computer also no longer has shellrestart.exe Dll initialization failed on shutdown now. That was there for a while and I couldn't figure it out, the scans must've fixed it.

Hi Baseballfan00,

Thanks. Ah, yes that was probably caused by some malware and the scans probably removed what the malware was using to cause that message.
