I am experiencing random freezing.  Sometimes every few days, sometimes every day, sometimes every couple hours.

There is no warning, no error message, or any message at all.  Mouse stops.  Keyboard stops.  Hard drive stops reading and writing (per indicator light).  Ctrl-alt-del does not respond.  I left it sitting for over 24 hours, and it did not resume.  Only option is to cut the power.

There is no established pattern.  Sometimes a browser and Notepad are open.  Sometimes just a word processor.  Sometimes other combinations.

I have checked Event Viewer under Application, and Hardware Events and there are no entries for the times in question.   I don't know if there is anywhere else to check.

I have run Memtest86 for a day using just the default settings and it says Pass.

It has been going on for about a year, that I remember.  I have been waiting for some Windows update to fix the problem, but that never happens.

What should I try next?

Thanks.

(Windows Vista, 32 bit, Home Premium)

I ran it 3 times:  1) says, "Error connecting to publishing server", 2) says, "Operation timed out."  3) says,  "Error connecting to publishing server".

Please, advise.

That's a known bug at the Speccy website...I think I've experienced it.

I believe it's random and I overcame it by just trying to do the snapshot later.

I must say that you are the only person who has reported such...among all the requests for Speccy snapshots which I've seen requested/posted during the last 10 days or so.

Max temp range for that CPU is 55-72 degrees...CPU is overheating, which certainly can account for described symptoms.

Please uninstall NetCut Defender, seems to be questionable software.\

Please uninstall InternetBOOST.

Xyvos Antivirus\XyvosAVSvc.exe is running, while Security Center reflects a status of "disabled" for unnamed AV program.  An AV that is disabled...isn't protecting the system at all.

Most, if not all, errors reflected in Event Viewer...relate to browsing/connection function.

A mixed bag of situations is what I see...dubious software, Internet connectivity issues, disabled AV, possible overheating of CPU/system.

I think that we need to eliminate the malware possibility first...before heading off in other directions.  Moving topic to Am I Infected forum.

Response:

I know what Netcut is and does.  It involves a joke I played on one of my friends.

I have had InternetBoost for over ten years.  I use it for my dialup account.

There is no disabled antivirus.  Xyvos is not being detected.

I don't know what to do about overheating.  Machine sits on hard laminated wood desktop surface.  This freezing also happens a lot at night when not being used and after the Power Options turn off display.

Recent freeze times that I have recorded are:  10-23, 1718; 10-25, 1743; 10-27, 1356.  I don't know if these times match up in any log or not.

I hope this information helps to help me.  Thanks.

Some weeks ago, a moderator thought that maybe I am infected and moved my question here.  I am wondering whether I am infected, or if it is something else.  Thanks.

G'day Ray,

As far as i can see, you are using Windows Defender as an AV.....correct ?

Windows Update is disabled

Please got to windows update and Enable Automatic updates....

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/turn-automatic-updating-on-off#turn-automatic-updating-on-off=windows-vista

if it wont turn back on ::

To fix the windows update issue, Microsoft has come up with resetting the Windows Update. To help yourself, click here

Make sure that you click on, "FIX IT"

Also go to task scheduler and delete/remove all tasks that are not current...I would suggest all of them...

then::

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Thank-you, for your response.

1.  Antivirus:  Yes, Windows Defender is on.  I also use Xyvos, which is always on.

2. Windows Update:  I do Windows updates regularly, manually.  I spend a lot of time at home where I only have dialup.  Automatic updates would make it so I would never be able to do anything by internet.  I wait until I am somewhere else and then do the updates.

3.Task Scheduler:  I don't use Task Scheduler, but I tried to open it to see what was there.  It says, "MMC could not create the snap-in."

4. Security Check:

I tend to agree....perhaps a clean out with a can of 'air' may help the situation./.....if only to remove the possibility of this being a factor.

Cleaning the Interior of your PC

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
* Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
* Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
* If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
* If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
* It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
* If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
* If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

.Please scan your computer with ESET Online Scanner
Disable active Antivirus and Antimalware programs How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virusHow To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus
This scan is best performed with Internet Explorer, as it uses ActiveX
If you will not use Internet Explorer, then please read item 3 in this post
1 - Open Internet Explorer and hold down Control (Ctrl) key and click on This Link  to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
2 - Click the ESET Online Scanner button.
3 - For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
a - Click on eset.exe  to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
b - Double click on the  icon on your desktop.
4 - Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
5 - Click the Start button.
6 - Accept any security warnings from your browser.
7 - Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
8 - Click Advanced settings and select the following:
* Scan potentially unwanted applications
* Scan for potentially unsafe applications
* Enable Anti-Stealth technology
9 - ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer.
10 - Please be patient as this will take some time (first time scans are always longer).
11 - When the scan completes, click List Threats
12 - Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
13 - Click the Back button and then Click the Finish button.
NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.
If you lose the log it can be found at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
If no infections are found then please tell me -
You can ignore any ESET detection of AdwCleaner...it is a false positive detection.
