vista homeprem SP2, etc.

during the week I was prompted to update my Avast free antivirus. this spiraled into a mess wherein first I had the apparently infamous "supposedly running but the tasktray icon is missing and the AV can't be accessed at all" thing, which persisted intermittently through reboots, uninstallation via avast's standalone uninstaller tool (avastclear.exe) and reinstallation...

the process of that broke the windows sidebar's calender gadget, and I don't know how to fix that. (it's just giving me a blank orange page). but wait, there's more.

eventually the AV decided to work properly... now. along the way, I followed the process someone on avast's forums applied, using the following tools:

glary utilities 3

ashampoo winoptimizer free

tweaknow regcleaner

wisecare 365

to houseclean for blatant registry problems and the like.

in the process of this, the "recent documents" component of the start menu has ceased to pick up things I open, and I had not used any options that I know of that should have caused this.

and since the AV started working again, the IME has been nonfunctional; I have the section of the taskbar it sat in, which even shows the "restore the language bar" context menu option, but conime.exe is not running and does not run when I attempt to invoke it via the run dialog be it from the start menu or from taskmanager.

system restore has not fixed these problems, and I have no means to do the "format, reinstall OS" method of resolving things.

as a result of spending most of a week fighting with avast, I have ceased using it, and on advice from quietman7 with regards to replacing avast, I've brought in MS security essentials. MSE made windows update go into auto mode again (which I avoid because there have been bad windows updates in the past, and I tend to check here before updating), and upon taking back control and letting windows update do it's thing, I have been left with the post topic here: error 646. the updates in question are for microsoft office, which I do not have installed. (the computer had a trial version when it was bought, but that was uninstalled.)

I tried looking up the error on MS's website and following their procedures to resolve it(both manually and through MS' fix-it widget provided by MS' support page), but to no avail. windows update insists on telling me about these updates that it can't install (that are for something I don't have anyway...)

so I'm in need of solutions for my disasterous problems here. what to do about windows update insistently providing updates it can't install for software that isn't present, my broken IME, and my broken calender widget.

neither avast nor MSE's quick scans have found malware, nor has MBAM, nor even eset's online scanner. I'm going to give eset one more run, but I'm suspecting the problem isn't malware itself. I'll edit this after the scan, if nobody's replied, detailing the results, and if it's malware beyond eset's ability you can be sure I'll be in the HJT/etc forum with logs.

EDIT:

during the time that I was running eset's scanner, Exploit:Java/CVE-2012-4681 was picked up by MSE. the time doesn't correspond to when I started the scan, so I am not sure it's a false positive related to eset, but eset itself did not find anything.

HJT logs and the like will be provided posthaste in the appropriate section if directed; I'm not sure what I'm dealing with here anymore.

Please...uninstall these and any similar programs you have installed.  Then...try running the chkdsk /r command.

done. chkdsk said something about having made adjustments to the file system, but I didn't catch most of the initial result thing; it was gone a bit too fast. the statement after it rebooted again said that the drive is "clean".

however, the issues outlined in the first post persist. calender's still busted, start menu>documents is still doing nothing, and conime.exe is still not working. (and windows update still can't do anything with the updates for office, which isn't installed anyway. msworks is here but seeing as it's not timered I can only surmise it's not part of office; never was Back In The Day, I seem to recall...)

what shall the next step be?

Please download MiniToolBox, and save it to your desktop and run it, and checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

I don't have firefox, so... no point having it look at settings for that, right? <.< if that's an issue anyway I'll rerun it for that if you want.
hosts file is MVP hosts file (with one thing commented out because something legit stupidly uses it for authentication...) so this is gonna be loooooooooong. also -arrivals- is where I put everything that I download for organization's sake, hope that's not a problem. >.o

....but that page says that isn't for vista...

also, okay, powerpoint viewer. managed to not notice that was in there; something else that needs to go away...

is it really wise to go with that guide if it's not for this version of windows?

Yes and the EventLog Service hasn't changed much since its inception back in Windows NT Days.

nnnnope. <.< when I looked up the 646 back when I first got it, it said it had to do with some paths in the registry... but going through by hand(before I tried MS' fixit thing for that error), the paths looked fine. I presume you wanted this done for the installer logs...?

these updates are security things for office, rather than windows itself; presuming I end up discarding the powerpoint viewer (which I've never even used...) they should be irrelevant, shouldn't they?

but that leaves the other problems still. busted sidebar calender-gadget (the regular calender is fine), busted start menu>documents thing, and busted IME... >.<

What was the exact error message relating to error 646? All I see is that there is error 1606 and 1603 with MS Office Updates.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2258121 this right here is the first thing I got when I searched MS about it.

windows update itself just says it encountered "an unknown error", and states error 646.
