Hello everyone,

I have a dell inspiron xps laptop that is just about a year and a half old w/ specs 3.4 ghz p4 w/ht and 1 gb ram. I am running windows xp home with service pack 1. I have been experiencing problems more and more frequently with my computer over the last few months. My computer runs excessively slow most times other than the first boot of the day, which will sometimes grant me operable running speeds for a duration. If i leave my computer for a period of time, my computer will respond sluggishly and the internet will stop working. Often times, the cpu is operating at 100%. I use firefox and zone alarm and do frequent scans of my computer with an out of date norton antivirus and hitman pro (which runs various spy and malware scans including adaware). These have failed to pick anything up, but the times it takes to scan have gone increasingly slower. Below is a copy of my hijack this log, please if anyone can see what it is wrong or have any suggestions for speedier performance, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello syntax and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see nosigns of viruses or malware in the log. There are a couple of housekeeping items we can clean up so let's do that while you are here.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Other than that you are good to go.

I recommend posting a question in the XP forum. They can assist with non-malware related performance issues. Let them know that you have been to this forum and no malware was found.

Cheers.
