4/29/06: This started a few days ago, when while clicking on a webpage link, something downloaded and then Internet Explorer shut down and since then I have been affected.

I have Windows XP Professional on a Dell Dimension XPS GEN III, running current updated Norton Antivirus 2006. Also had Microsoft's Window Defender running. I am using a Linksys WRT54GS router in conjunction with my cable modem. I do have a port open for my bittorent client.

Symptoms: Start page hijacked by www.safetydefender.com, Norton sends me a popup saying that Home page is attempting to be changed ( I Click "no", but still is hijacked). Page suggests using malwarewipe.com to get rid of problems. I get a popup saying, "Urgent System Message: Virus!" from my quick launch bar (lower right corner in IE). I get numerous popups, gambling, porn, system infected with virus, C drive being erased, etc....

I have WinPatrol installed (saw it listed in PC World) and it gives me a "WinPatrol Program Alert warning me that an IE helper is trying to be added (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hp7520.tmp and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hp2B9F.tmp and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hp783D.tmp) and I click "no".

I searched on the internet and found a page describing my popups almost exactly and it said those popups are symptoms of Puper Trojan.

I have tried so many things: ran Norton, downloaded Ad-Aware and Spybot and ran, searched McAfee and Norton's sites for info. Searched the internet, installed X cleaner from Spyinfo.com site. Then I found your site and have follower the preparation guide. Some of these programs found things, some didn't. If they did then I would keep running them until they found nothing or couldn't fix the problem.

I could not get Panda Anti Virus to run. I also noted after I installed Spybot that sometimes upon installing or running the other programs that Spybot would have a popup box notifying me of a registry change, but the choice boxes were not visible, they looked folder upon themselves so that you could not read what was written on them. I just wonder if that is a symptom of my problem.

So I have tried many things but the problems are still here. Currently my System Restore is turned off. I am beside myself in what to do, PLEASE HELP ME! Thank you.

Hello wmfy,

It's better to print out the next instructions or save them in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

1. Please disable Spybot's Teatimer, since it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If Teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
(How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup)
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Also disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
Finally disable Winpatrol, as it may also hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
Right click the running icon of winpatrol, and choose exit.

2. Download roguescanfix.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick roguescanfix.exe to install.
This will create a new folder on your desktop called roguescanfix.
Do not use this yet!

3. Run HijackThis and check the following entry:O2 - BHO: Nothing - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7520.tmp
Close all open windows EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

4. Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
5. Open the roguescanfix folder and click: Run.bat
This tool needs internet connection so it can download an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
Let the tool perform its job.
The icons will disappear temporarely from your desktop, and reappear. This is normal.
Wait until the message Completed script execution is displayed, and click OK.
Click Exit to close down bfu.
Finally: click OK to start the Spyfalcon and/or Spywarequake uninstaller, and click uninstall.
WARNING: You will be asked to reboot your computer. Wait until the uninstallers did their job before clicking YES.

6. See if you van perform an onlinescan with panda now: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

If it doesn't work, use Bitdefender onlinescan again (as you apparently did before  )

7. Post the contents of the Panda scan report (or the Bitdefender log) in your next reply along with a new HijackThis Log,
by using Add Reply.

Greetings,
BMThor

Thank you for your help! I did all as instructed. The Panda weblink from the Preparation Page and the one that was in your reply is different, so maybe that is why I could not run Panda before.

Here is Panda's log:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/securityerror Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\William\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url

I did nothing with Panda other than scan and report this log to you.

Hello wmfy,

You log looks much better now.

Some leftovers to clean up :

Run HijackThis and check the following entries:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {b0398eca-0bcd-4645-8261-5e9dc70248d0} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

Close all open windows EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Also your JavaVM is outdated!
Please update your Java and clear the cache!:
Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
You can reenable your antispyware programs,
however do NOT use more than one realtime protection (either Spybot's TeaTimer or Windows Defender)

Finally, you can delete C:\Documents and Settings\William\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url using Windows Explorer or by deleting it out of your Favorites in Internet Explorer.
Empty the Trash Can to make sure it's gone.

This should take care of your problems,
how is your system running now?

Greetings,
BMTor

BMThor, thank you!

I deleted the two entries in HijackThis.

I tried to update the Java but Norton kept stopping the install, then I went to the weblink you posted and successfully downloaded it.

Norton is already running.

What about TeaTimer, which should I run SpyBot or Window Defender? What would you do? TeaTimer is a registry change notifier or something similar? How do you turn it off in Window Defender, or do I just uninstall Windows Defender? What about WinPatrol? Doesn't it do something similar? Should I use all three?

Also in SpyBot, there is a box for SDHelper (IE bad download blocker), should I turn this on? I did not have it on originally? Does it affect any of the other situations mentioned in the last paragraph?

Also before I delete C:\Documents and Settings\William\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url , I ran Panda one more time and it found one infection from Adware and here is the log result:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/securityerror Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\William\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url
So I take it once I delete this Antivirus Test Online.url then Panda would no longer see it as Adware?

Also my system Restore Points are still disabled, I guess I should turn them back on?

So how am I doing?

So somethings to do are:

1)TeaTimer depending on how you answer
2)delete the Antivirus Test Online.url
3)enable Restore Points

Then am I back to normal?

Many, many thanks I owe you.

Hello wmfy,

Your log looks clean now.

1)TeaTimer depending on how you answer

I would Enable Spybot's features : both SDHelper and TeaTimer,
and leave the realtime protection of Windows Defender and WinPatrol disabled. (checked out)
Spybot is a good program that has proven its value.
The other two can function as backup.

2)delete the Antivirus Test Online.url

Absolutely :flowers:

3)enable Restore Points

Yes please.
Btw. it's never a good idea to disable System restore on an infected PC.
In a worst case scenario, you don't have anything to fall back to.

You should be OK now.

Greetings,
BMThor

BMThor,

Sorry for the trouble: but this morning I had popups happen all over again. Without me surfing the internet except for checking to see if you had replied back to my previous message (I did open some files I had on my desktop for awhile, but I thought those were files that I had accessed before, either way they are now deleted).

The popups were very similar: one from the quick launch bar with the message: "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 Install (Yellow triangle with black exclamation point) Internal Error 2755. 1624, http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/download/6ctFil...-iftw.msi"

Winpatrol showed messages: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\runsrv32.exe and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\susp.exe

And other messages like System Alert, Warning Spyware on your System with the Yellow triangle.

Restore points and TeaTimer were still disabled.

I went into Safe Mode and ran Norton Antivirus 2006, rebooted then I went through the steps on your Preparation page. I ran SpyBot, Ad-Aware, Housecall Antivirus, Panda Antivirus, Bit Defender, McAfee Stinger. All found something and deleted various items. Then I ran Panda again and here is the results:

Adware:adware/btgrab Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\BTGrab.dll

BMThor,

Here is some additonal information that I should have placed in the previous message. The popups are currently gone, no signs of Malware except for the Panda report.

Please tell me when to turn TeaTimer and Restore Points back on.

Hello wmfy,

It looks like you picked up some new malware.

Let's do a cleanup:

Go to Control Panel > Software and uninstall Windows Defender

Disable WinPatrol:Right Click the 'Scotty Dog' icon in the system tray
Click Always Run Winpatrol
When WinPatrol dialog comes up asking about Startup change, click Yes
1. Download and install CCleaner-basic
Do not use the program at this time.

2. Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido anti-malware:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido:
    ewido manual updates
  • Close ewido. DO NOT RUN IT YET.
3. Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
4. Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8.
A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

5. Run HijackThis and check this entry, if still present:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {e52dedbb-d168-4bdb-b229-c48160800e81} - (no file)
Close all open windows and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

6. Using Windows Explorer, search and remove, if present, these files (only the one in bold!):C:\WINDOWS\BTGrab.dll
C:\WINDOWS\dlmax.dll
C:\WINDOWS\susp.exe
7. Run CCleaner, click the Windows tab and select the following:Internet Explorer:Temp Internet
History
Recently Typed URLs
Delete Index.dat files
System:Empty Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Memory Dumps
Chkdsk File Fragments
Old Prefetch Data
Next: click Options, click the Settings tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click OK
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right), then Exit
8. Run Ewido anti-malware:
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Save it to your Desktop.
9. Restart your computer in normal mode

10. Please post a fresh HijackThis log and the log from ewido.

"J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 Install (Yellow triangle with black exclamation point) Internal Error 2755. 1624, http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/download/6ctFil...-iftw.msi"

It seems an installation package is still being started to install Java, although you already have the latest version by now. Cancel this installation and if possible remove it.

As soon as Panda comes up clean, you can activate Spybot's TeaTimer en reenable System Restore.

Greetings,
BMThor

BMThor, I will turn on System Restore and enable TeaTimer on SpyBot. I will await your instructions on the rest of the treatment to get rid of the malware. If your next set of instructions needs System Restore or TeaTimer turned off then tell me to do so. AGAIN, THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Hello wmfy,

Your log looks nearly clean now.

Just fix this entry : O2 - BHO: (no name) - {e52dedbb-d168-4bdb-b229-c48160800e81} - (no file)
using HijackThis,

and delete this file : C:\WINDOWS\Pynix.dll
using Windows Explorer.

That should have taken care of your problems?

I will turn on System Restore and enable TeaTimer on SpyBot.

Good idea. :flowers:

Greetings,
BMThor

BMThor,

Many, Many, Many thanks from me to you!. Thank you for your time and your caring! I have done as you instructed. I have not ran Panda Virus etc... but I think you are correct that I am all clean now. Other than SpyBot and Ad aware and antivirus (in my case Norton 2006), is there any program(s) that you would recommend having or have running in the background to decrease these Hijack Malware from getting their fingers into our systems.

Thank you again,

wmfy

I will donate some $ to the site.

Hello wmfy,

Glad we could help.

-----------------

Below I have included some recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously ; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1. Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ on a regulare basis and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer.
This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

2. It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and instal one of these excellent (and free) products: Sygate
Kerio
Tiny Personal Firewall
Outpost
It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

3. Make sure to keep your antispyware programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

4. Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is very good and more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has a built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) . If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place
and/or Grinlers tutorial on how malware is hidden and installed
Hopefully this should take care of your problems!

Greetings,
BMThor
