I just recently located the registry value associated with showing and hiding hidden files.

The data type is DWORD.

The data being set at a 2 keeps hidden files hidden.

The data being set at a 1 shows hidden files.

Using the above information, I created two shortcuts to show and hide hidden files via .reg file.

Each shortcut works but I have to restart Windows Explorer for both to take effect.

I am looking for someone that can help me get them to take effect immediately.

Why not just set it to show hidden files and folders in the Control Panel and leave it at that.

How to see hidden files in Windows Vista

"Dude", once you have made the change to open hidden files you won't need a short cut, they will already be accessible.

If this isn't what you want, then I don't understand just what you are trying to accomplish, and obviously will be of no further help to you.

Happy computing. :thumbup2:

A man can dream, right Slim? This guy came up a script for a right click context menu item. I'd try it, but it is prompting me to stick it some where on my C: drive, and I can't figure out the best place for it.

A man can dream, right Slim?

Amen my brother! :thumbup2:

And god, I wish I knew how to do stuff like what he did on my own. I was trying to make shortcuts that would be accessible through my keyboard but that is even better.

I'd try it, but it is prompting me to stick it some where on my C: drive, and I can't figure out the best place for it.

I just followed the directions and installed it on my C:\ drive like it insisted. With a registry backup of course.

It shows the two files on your C:\ drive that he used, it's a vbs and a reg file. Definitely interesting and helpful to see the code he used.

It worked perfectly. Can't thank you enough Bezukhov for your find. :grinner:

And dc3, I apologize I suppose I didn't specify that I am trying to find an easier way than the one you explained.

Agreed!

I just learned that all I had to do for my shortcuts was press F5 to refresh windows explorer. :lmao:

Another one of my party tricks.   This is used when I'm too lazy to reach for my keyboard and I only need to type a few letters:

  1. Right click or press and hold on an empty area on your desktop, and click/tap on New and Shortcut.
  2. Copy and paste    %windir%\System32\osk.exe location area, and click/tap on the Next button.
  3. Name it whatever your heart desires.
