[attachment=142929:Black Screen.JPG]

Hi all -

My XP SP3 shows this about once in every 5 times or so that I log on to internet (Internet Explorer 8).

The site is not related (here or anywhere else), and has been a pain for a month or so.

All of the top area is black (few minor exceptions) but the tabs are still under their correct places.

I can mouse over where the Favorites or Tools etc should be and still click on them, but there is no writing there. I can live with it, but .......

I have reset I.E. to "normal" but this is very random, and may not happen for a week, then pop up the next day and stay for a few days. It may happen all one day, after turning off for several hours, and often like today, it will not show up after I have shut down for several hours.

P.S. Screen shot was 5 hours ago, and all is "normal" now -

Any Ideas - Thank You -

I'd also be (somewhat) interested to know if anyone has an answer. It seems to be something IE is prone to, it happens on several different systems I've used, and is one of the reasons I seldom use IE.

Top 5 things that never get done:

Hi -

It is "rare" but as described, it can be random and often seem to last a few sessions, or just a single session.

Any more info I would be glad to add, but it just seems random -

Thanks for looking -

Edited because it is late here .... :bubbles:

I use IE 8...and I've never seen such...but I don't use/install browser add-ons and I'd be guessing that it stems from such, with a distinct possibility of being also related to OEM systems and related installed browser add-ons.\

I don't use OEM systems, generally.

related installed browser add-ons <= WOT is the extra line (unless you ask for details)

I don't use OEM systems <= Please ask for extra shots for this. It is a University Instructors computer, and also personal unit, that I just got for doing a bit of work and my last one had gone to the spare parts ward.

This is the first time that I have ever seen it on any regular basis, 3 XPs and a Win 98 (yes I seem to have bad luck), all running I.E. (updated) with ORCA on the last 3, and the history of only one was ever known. I purchased a new Samsung, and the rest are donations or payment, often for installing an updated system.

I try to set each one the same, but this one seems to be only have a short life remaining, and this is my reason for posting the topic.

Thank You for the reply.

Reminds me what to ask for at this years Christmas present requests :gathering:

Ive seen this a few times, maybe a windows glitch ?

Go to Desktop properties and set to Classic style, then set it back again

to the setting you had before and that fixes it.

Try this:
go to start, control panel, click Internet options. Under the general tab, go down to Appearance and click colors. Uncheck the "use windows colors box" and click ok.

Thank you both for those options :)  but they were among the first ideas I had used

Remember that it is very random, like just now when I came on line (here).

You must remember thay all other Apps (Notepad etc) are always "normal"

It is just randomly the On-line Header.

None helped with this, :( , but I was very happy to see your responses -

Thank You

GREAT FIND Wolverine 7 -
...... I will try option 1 ........ but ?? should I wait for the Black Bar to pop up again ??

Yesterday it was there in the AM(1 hour) but gone in the PM(6 hours). (I do turn off 2 or 3 times per day)

Now I must re-read it   :scratchhead:

I think i would follow the instructions in the first link and wait to see if theirs a recurrence, cant do any harm, these kinds of issues you just have go step by step till you isolate the cause, first time this happened to me i thought oh no virus, but the desktop properties

fix worked.Havnt had this on current install,i tend to sort IE out and then just use Firefox, less headaches:-)

Id give that first link a go,looks likely:-)

OK Woolfie -

Been there / done that and Rebooted, but the Task-bar did not grow to the extent as shown in their example.

All seems normal, but I did it under "normal screen conditions" and not Black Bar conditions ........

We can just wait, as this was so random, it may be a week or so to be sure.

I am an Internet Explorer user, so it will stay that way, and I have my old version of ORCA (Avant) for now

I also want to see if this will work, or if I need to wait for the Black Header again.

So - Thanks for the great link (and I joined their forum).

Forgot to add -

I did notice that several icons altered their position on the desktop, and it seems that WOT is disabled

Apart from that, all is still "normal".

Thanks -

Yeah id still have to fix it even if using FF,reason for it somewhere and ie looks terrible when it does it,

you should be able to re enable the wot?,and just move the icons back...

Dont think i can recreate the problem on my sys cos im not sure what caused it in the first place,

Might try  and play around with it if i get a minute.

Guess you can only track it by waiting to see if the header comes back and go from there, hopefully not

If it doesn't come back i guess problem solved?

You could ask for a Linux for Christmas?just kidin :-)

Anyway good luck,keep us posted:-)

All still seems OK, and those basics I did first thing -
