I have some sort of browser hijacker that's causing me grief. Malware bytes didn't find anything but SuperAntiSpyware found a ton of stuff. I quarantined it all but i'm thinking it's going to take more than that to get rid of it. I've had malware on my system before but it usually gives me something i can google and fix on my own. This one doesn't have any easy identifiers that i can see so I'm kind of lost.

I noticed the problems last night, i was playing a game online and after that i was doing some searches for about 30 minutes then went back to another game. At that point the game was so laggy and my ping was insanely high when i'm normally very low. I had been having some minor but odd things with my Internet explorer recently. AVG secure search coming up sometimes when i searched from the bing toolbar. But after that lag spike things got worse. A pop up kept jumping out saying to update java. It didn't look right so i kept saying no or cancel but it repeatedly jumped up until i just ignored it. When i googled solutions or topics the links would redirect me to the wrong address and my internet speeds took a huge hit. It seems to be isolated to internet explorer as using google chrome doesn't seem to have the same problems and If I don't open IE and just use Chrome it doesn't seem to kick in with the laggy internet and high fan speed. once IE is started the lag starts spiking horribly and fan speeds run up.

Here is my Hijack this log:

Something is still giving me problems. When I open IE, my internet speed test is hampered quite a bit. However, the same test done from google chrome before i opened IE was much closer to what i'm used to. In addition, my laptop fan speed increases a lot once IE opens up and continues even after i shut IE off. It doesn't do this if I just have Chrome open first and never touch IE.

help please?

Hello bburrow

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan.
  • After the scan is complete click on "Clean"
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Gringo

What I said earlier about it not affecting internet speeds on chrome is incorrect. It has affected me this morning even though i haven't touched IE.

Hello bburrow

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I didn't run into any real problems. I had 3 pop ups after the restart that said items couldn't be loaded because they were marked for deletion. Two were the toshiba laptop care stuff which has always been there. They came pre-packaged with the laptop and i surely won't miss them. The third I didn't recognize at all.

I am getting windows firewall security alert messages popping up saying "windows firewall has blocked some features of this program....." There's one for pando networks\media booster\pmb.exe

I'm not sure how to respond to these. i've never had a windows firewall security alert before so i'm not sure where that's coming from. I'm not even sure i had the windows firewall running before.

Otherwise, the fan speed is back down low like it used to be. The internet speed checks are much higher with the low ping that it used to have. The problem seems to be fixed for now but i'll have to try more on it later.

Just another quick note. I shutdown after trying a few applications and speed checks. I have 19 windows system updates applying now. These are taking quite a while and i hope its legit and not the malware reinstalling or something.

Edit: upon startup there was a lot of updates and what looked like registry updates included. Normal procedure i hope?

Edit 2: loooong update process but things seem to be much better. No sign of the problems from before.

Hello bburrow

At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Folder::
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Alheihlo
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Eppeylew
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Giydnair
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Eluluh
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Vefeyby
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Ecazema
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Nyibbyv

c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Aticixha
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Fydemeky
c:\users\Brandon\AppData\Roaming\Olyzqyno

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
    • report from Combofix
    • let me know of any problems you may have had
    • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

I was just logging on to post here that I think there's still an issue when I saw your new post. Jumped into a game since i thought the problem was fixed. Huge lag issues still. My Ping was jumping from 50 to 1000+ at times. I've never had an issue with my ping on this game before and since Thursday it's not even playable. In the past my ping is usually 20-30.

I see no other symptoms though. No redirection from google. Internet speed tests are sketchy. Sometimes it seems to be where it should be, others it's slow. I should be around 11 Mps download and 1-1.5 up and since this started happening on my profile i've been hitting more like 8 down and <1 up. Since the first combofix run it's been between 8-11 download and up has seemed to be around 1 so I was thinking it might have been ok. Maybe not.

Thank you for all the help, I really appreciate it. Next step?

Hello bburrow

I would like you to try and run these next.

TDSSKiller

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • more than one report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". The one that I need is the larger one. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

    ==================
    Scan finished
    ==================
and I will see if I want to see the whole report

--RogueKiller--

Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller for 32bit or Roguekiller for 64bit
  • Quit all programs that you may have started.
  • Please disconnect any external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
  • For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"
  • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Then Click on "Scan" button
  • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
  • click on "delete"
  • Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished"
  • Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
  • the scan will make two reports the one I would like to see is called RKreport[2].txt on your Desktop
  • Exit/Close RogueKiller+
send me the reports made from TDSSKiller and Roguekiller and also let me know how the computer is doing at this time.

I'm going to run those two but I came back to add a comment that after running the file on combofix i played another game (vs bots so not exactly the same) and my ping was stable at 46. I will run those two and post tonight or tomorrow depending on how long they take to run.

As for how it's doing. I'm not sure since i just ran these and haven't restarted or tried anything. I can come back tomorrow and give you more impressions.

Edit: Initial impressions are positive. webpages are popping up faster than I can remember them previously. played a few minutes on a game (not with people so don't know if that would change it) and my ping was 26 pretty steady so that's a good sign. I'll try a real game tomorrow and see how it goes.

Edit2: things definetly seem better. Internet loads fast, online games are pinging at 20-40 all the time and no more lag spikes.

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing. These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (it does allot better of a job
  • Programs to remove

    • Adobe Reader 9.3.3
      Coupon Printer for Windows
      Java™ 6 Update 14
      LimeWire 5.5.9

  • Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free
  • Double click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
  • From the list of programs double click on The Program to remove

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
    • If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

I see you have MBAM installed - I think this is a great program and would like you to run a quick scan at this time
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
