I'm a long time lurker but didnt join until I had a problem.

Running windows 7pro 64bit (legit oem copy)

I dont like office 07 and newer and was attempting to activate office 03

after the attempted activation once i rebooted every file i tried to view or open became zero bytes in size.

Yes it's a legit copy of office 03 with key, since MS is ending support for it I thought I'd try an activation tool found on the net.

I submitted the activation tool to Virus total and it came back clean.

since the infection I've run

tdss killer

mbar

malwarebytes

super antispyware

eset online scan

emisoft recovery

and probably one or two more i dont remember.

Nothing other than a few tracking cookies, etc found.

Help or suggestions greatly appreciated

thanks

Hi nasdaq,
thanks for helping, sorry for my delay in replying.
After the inital infection and none of my scans found anything, I booted from a boot cd and
searched for all the files created on the oct 16 at the time I ran the activation tool
(virus). I found two files created at the same time (1:48pm) I deleted those files and
rebooted the PC normally and the infection appears to be gone. No more files are being set
to zero bytes.
However ther are a number of programs and windows features that dont work because of the 0
byte files, firefox, thunderbird, public libraries, etc.

I was hoping if a known virus was found cleaning it might fix my 0 byte files. But it looks
like I may just have to wipe and reload this pc just to make sure it's clean.
I ran the programs and posted the logs you requested except for JRT. I ran it twice and both
times it got to checking Internet Explorer and just dissappeared, rebooted before the second
run.
thanks for your help

However ther are a number of programs and windows features that dont work because of the 0
byte files, firefox, thunderbird, public libraries, etc.

I was hoping if a known virus was found cleaning it might fix my 0 byte files. But it looks
like I may just have to wipe and reload this pc just to make sure it's clean.

How sure are you that none of your operating files were not also damaged?

I think it's your best option.

You can reinstall some applications but there could always be others that you did not use and will have to be reinstalled.
