Hello,

I was sent to this forum by boopme after trying to resolve my issue in the "Am I infected" forum.

I ran rkill, ADW, ESET, and MiniToolBox.  I tried TFC, but it didn't quite work.

Rather than re-type the details of the problem, I've included a link to the original topic I posted:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/509654/suddenly-very-sluggish-computer-cannot-log-on-as-standard-user/

My first and last posts on that topic explain the problem, except that the "failed to connect to a windows service" message isn't appearing now, and my task bar and windows appear normal.

Thank You.

Hello nasdaq,

I followed the clean start instructions and it still took a half hour to fully start.  Although I did disable all services, Avast started anyway.

Thanks,

ir0nman

Hello,

I created a restore point, but the tool recommends backing up the registry, too.  Does the restore point back up the registry?

Thanks,

ir0nman

Hello nasdaq,

I re-ran the windows repair, but my computer still takes a half hour to start; and avast didn't turn on automatically.  I had to manually start it after the re-boot.  Also, in my system and security action center, I have a message that avast is turned off, even after I turned it on.

Thank you,

ir0nman

I would remove Avast using the Add/Remove Programs.
Restart the computer normally.
Re-install the application.

Any luck?

Stop this process.
C:\windows\system32\SearchIndexer.exe

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/28450/what-is-searchindexer.exe-and-why-is-it-running/

Restart the computer normally.

How is it now?

Just to make sure it's not caused by some malware please run this online scan.

Please scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer.
      Save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. icon on your Desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

If the problem is not solved I suggest that you start a new topic in tne Windows 7 Forum.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum167.html

I do not think that the cause is malware.
