My daughter is doing some home school programs that are ran from an external HD. Sometimes it works and other times it will randomly freeze or kick her out of the program and go back to the desktop. The application changes the resolution of the screen while in use so when the application has issues, it will leave the resolution at the readjusted size. The drive never makes any disconnect sounds so I don't know if the drive is being unmounted and remounted. The program is able to be reloaded just fine if it goes back to the desktop but if it freezes, then I have to do a reset. The first time it had issues, it gave this error:

One of the USB devices attached to this computer
has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it.

Device Properties says: Windows has stopped this device
because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

When device is unplugged and the system is restarted, the device says "There might be a problem with some files on this device or disc. This can happen if you remove the device or disc before all files have been written to it" when it is plugged back in. It give the options to "Scan and fix (recommended)" or to "continue without scanning."

I selected Scan and fix and since it has not given any error, it just freezes or kicks out of the application.

Does this sound like an issue with the USB drives on my computer, registry (program installs some stuff to the computer), or an issue with the external HD? I know that the HDs returned and are reused after the school year is over it may be possible it is old and getting wore out. Just want to fix my computer if that is the issue before talking to the company. Thanks for your help.

Remove the USB external drive...run the chkdsk /r program on the Windows partition.

Re-attach the external drive, run the chkdsk /r command on the exernal drive.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Thanks for your help. I ran Check disk on the system drive and it said C volume is clean. I then tried to run it on the External HD a few times and kept getting the message in the photo below.

An update. When the HD is left plugged in while the computer is in standby, it will give an error upon waking up that the drive has failed to mount or something like that. Under device manager, it says that "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)."

Max temperature for your CPU seems to be 62 Celsius, current is 52 Celsius.

Nothing obvious in Speccy data.

Seems clear that your external hard drive is a problem...is failing.  Could be the drive itself, could be the enclosure...the device is a problem.  Not sure why programs would be on an external drive, with plenty of room on the hard drive.  In any case...I suggest trying to move any valued data from the external drive to the internal drive.

Thanks Louis. I'll give the company a call then. The program is about 80 GB so I think that is why it stays on the supplied HD. After the school year, you send it back. My assumption is that it has been used by many different people over a few years and after the use everyday, probably just starting to crap out. Hope they will just send a new one without much hassle. Oh joy I guess. Thanks again.
