http://sharewareonsale.com/s/tint-guide-image-resize-guide-sale links to http://tintguide.com/imageresize.html where the installer hijacks your browsers even if you say "no" to all the crapware offers. It goes ahead and attempts to add a couple add-ins to Firefox (I said no) and succeeds in hijacking the homepage to (http://mysearch.avg.com/pages/abt/pb/homepage.aspx?cid=%7BEB536AC6-83F4-4B11-BF36-640D42A5C2D4%7D&mid=7894de05658747d394f77d3bcf34cde7-16268acd865a87f0487e6c5e2de27bd59131657f&lang=en&ds=co011&pr=sa&d=2013-10-12%2013:31:12&pid=safeguard&sg=66&v=17.1.0.27&sap=hp&tc=test8), and on Firefox but not IE opens a second window (http://www.pchealthboost.com/m/1/lp/fix-windows-errors.php). It also hijacks the search box to AVG & resists any change to the default.

Would appreciate help with the deworming.

I did not exhibit this in my browsing those links, it could have been a drive by or you could be already infected.

Please download MiniToolBox, and save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:

Flush DNS
Report IE Proxy Settings
Reset IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
Reset FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

The computer did not exhibit this behavior prior to the installation and exhibited it immediately afterwards. Also, despite carefully declining all offers Firefox caught the attempt to add two add-ins at the end of the process. This doesn't happen from "browsing the link", it happened from running the installer. Did you sandbox it?

There is no doubt as to the source of the infection. It is possible that the tintguide site was hacked to substitute a malware installer, that it was corrected somehow but the affected downloaders' email addresses not recorded, that tintware has been unable to contact them or find time to banner to download page to warn people about what happened... That they're crooks seems a much simpler explanation. I had some hesitancy when I saw the link in Cyrillic on the download page, and the stereotype proved true.

I will run the program you suggested next.

I just tried in Windows on my VM and there was no redirection or installation of any add-ons what so ever. SO it must have been a drive by from one the ads.

So you are saying the bad actor in this case is someone who placed an ad with the installer vendor?

I've directed tintware to this thread. If they're getting a bad name due to their installer not properly vetting its ads, they need to follow up on it.

In fact I downloaded the installer, and it installed just fine without adding anything to IE or Firefox.

ADW Cleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
and save it to your desktop.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hello,

I'm the owner of SharewareOnSale, the website the original poster alleges to have gotten a virus from.

The program in question, Image Resize Guide, does not contain any crapware nor does it do any hijacking. I've installed it myself and tested it, as has Bleepin Madman who confirms this notion. Similarly, the OP has not actually downloaded the program from our website. Whenever someone posts a comment on a product thread, if they have bought the product they are tagged with "verified owner" next to their name. If you head over the post the OP linked, you will see a comment by them but no "verified owner" tag, meaning they didn't actually download anything from us.

That said, it is quite possible the OP clicked on an ad on our website instead of downloading the program we offered. However, all ads are run vis-a-vis Google AdSense, so the chances of them being malicious is very small.

I don't know what happened to cause all this but the OP's blame on us or Tint Guide is completely misguided.

Take care,

Ashraf

The free version of SUPERAntiSpyware apparently no longer provides logs. The tab is gone. I ran it and it only found and deleted cookies, anyway.

It appears that the virus no longer prevents changing Firefox's home page or or the default browser. And IE went back to its old home page without the necessity of changing it back from AVG search.
