and want to check with you as computer does not seem as responsive as it should. Also I am unable to get internal card drive to see an inserted SD card. I had removed anything I thought doubtful like those toolbars a few weeks back

I am sorry the my approach must appear tardy, but the perceived performance problem has been muddied by difficulties with the local public power supply, necessitating renewals.

My security is ZA free antivirus and firewall, Malwarebytes paid version, System Win7 64 Home Premium

Please remove Zone Alarm via this tool http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/download/clean.exe and see if the issue exists. I would highly recommend not using Zone Alarm for antivirus or firewall as they are notorious for being a system resource hog.

Before I do remove ZA, what free AV and firewall do you suggest I replace it with, MSE excluded?

Should I have received by now a reply that deals with my principal problem ( not a side issue of ZA)?

Hello -

I hope these are what you want. Please note that the program "DSLStats" is a router monitoring program similar to Routerstats, written specifically for those with Broadcom chips.
Thanks for list of AVs.

Thanks for the extra information. this always saves us time -

I think I did not add that the Windows 7 firewall is now greatly improved and is suited to most of the Antivitus programs around these days.

Please give us some time to review what you have posted.

Thank You -

Well here are a few areas to start with.

Screen317 Checkup is basically OK  (as in up to date)

A few problems show in MiniToolBox reports -

Please remove (uninstall) IObit Unlocker (Version: 1.0)

I have added this since we want to find out how many problems we can easily fix -

Just my personal, but I would remove CustomIcons (they look pretty but can cause problems)
Uninstaller is located: C:\Program Files\CustomIcons\uninstall.exe

Why was the System Restore done? Is this related to any current problems or other reasons.

"An unspecified error occurred during System Restore: (DCInstallRestorePoint)."

You do have an internet issue and it shows even prior to Errors
Was this done from your normal home link, or somewhere else ?
"DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds."

This error shows up a few times in System errors: ........
The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start ...

All 10 Code Integrity Errors are related to Z.A. which is causing many other problems, and as Cryptodan has said, please remove it.
Please remove Zone Alarm and see what issues still exist. Use these directions

Do you know how to do a (free) Speed Test ?

Just type Speed Test into Google and you will get a list of local (more local than me) links. Please select any one of them, but stay away from any advertising on these sites, that is how they make money. Click on Start and wait for the test to finish. This will record your general internet speed (seems to be a problem there also) and post the numbers back with your reply.

Thank You -

HI! Hope what I am sending now is OK and not too verbose. :)

Iobit Unlocker ....removed
Customicons.......removed
Zone Alarm.........removed and others installed
The system restore attempts were in re problems I had getting the computer’s internal card reader to recognise our camera cards. Under advice from Dell I had downloaded the diver from their site and installed it. My thinking was to roll back and start over.
As the sys res failed twice and the reader problem remained, I decided more drastic action might be required, but as I connected my external drive to start a backup, the still inserted cars was recognised.

The internet issue arose from something that showed up on return from holiday. Prior to that I had a very good ADSL2+ sync at 3dB noise margin that had held for months. On return the margin had increased to 6dB and considerable CRCs and ES were evident. I learnt that there had been complaints, and that the power company’s nearby equipment was to be repaired. The repair completed , issues remained. These concern phone use causing violent swings in upstream noise margin and instability. I am working on those presently.
<<The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start>>
I have tried to find an example in case you may need the extended info, but have failed.

Results from Speedtest.net on Namesco London Server
Ping 42ms Downstream 5.43Mbps Upstream 0.64Mbps.

Your internet is very poor at those speeds, have you contacted your ISP about this?

Mine is (on a bad day) Ping 8 to 10 and about 15Mbps (I forget the other one) You are dragging !!

Any extra information is always good ......... :)

>The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start< This can be Googled.

These are some ideas from M/soft on helping clean and add a bit of speed. Just try them.

Method 1:

I would suggest you to run the performance troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Open the Performance troubleshooter

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Performance-troubleshooter

Method 2:

You may also run the FIXIT from the link mentioned below and check.

Fix Windows system performance problems on slow Windows computers

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/slow_windows_performance/en-us

Method 3:

I would also suggest you to run the FIXIT from the link mentioned below.

Some services do not start in Windows Vista and Windows 7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943996

Now for My Temp File Cleaner

Please download TFC, or Temp File Cleaner from Old Timer that you may have (run every second day)
Usage Instructions:

  • Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
  • Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
  • Double-click on the TFC icon.
  • When the program opens, click on the Start button.  TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
  • When done, press OK and reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.

Thanks -

Hi! Nothing was found  from using any of the methods. TFC has been run.

As to Internet, I am doing all my checks before referring to ISP. Generally though the UK phone and web infrastructure is not what it should be. The copper and aluminium cabling is old and not much renewal is done; it's patch ups. All that's better is FTTC for an extra £10 a month, and not a great benefit to me due to distance from PCP. BTW my attenuation is 47.5 dB.

Fiber Optics to the home is so worth the upgrade and the extra cost of 10 pounds per month. I would highly recommend that you get Fiber Optics, your browsing will never be the same.

As to Internet, I am doing all my checks before referring to ISP ......

In general I agree with the above (if available) - I do not have the option yet. Check whith your ISP and take their advice on what options are available, as we can only give you Software choices from here. Hardware beyond your computer (and wires) is for you to chase up (Sorry)..

Post back after the call to the ISP as they are usually good (at least here they are) but have a cuppa waiting.

These concern phone use causing violent swings in upstream noise margin and instability.......

I learnt that there had been complaints, and that the power company’s nearby equipment was to be repaired......

Would this also include Phone Lines (rather than power?) as internet is via Telephone, not power lines.

I have given you the basic diagnostics, but I can not work with Ping 42ms Downstream 5.43Mbps Upstream 0.64Mbps.

If this was mine, I would replace the computer or my ISP (I did both) - Second option is to hook a known "good" Windows 7 computer to your Ethernet and re-run the Speed Check to compare them.

I have done this for people I work for (help) as a test against theirs, and I do get changes in readings.

Thank You -

Thanks all for the advice, which I will consider.
