Hi there,

I found this forum when my laptop was infected by qvo6, and I've removed that hijacker successfully using the instructions here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-qvo6.com-browser-hijacker), thanks very much to all the volunteers!

Not sure if I'm being more sensitive to my laptop's changes because of the qvo6 incident, but recently I've found that my CPU usage is always high - at least 50% even when I'm not running any programs.

When I open Windows Task Manager the numbers in CPU never add up to 50%, so I'm not sure what process is hogging it. Once I open Chrome, it can go up to 80-90%, which hasn't really happened before (I usually can use Chrome, Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word simultaneously without any problems).

Would someone be able to help me with this? As mentioned, when my laptop was infected with qvo6, I ran iExplore, adwcleaner, malwarebytes and the scans are clear except for a "##### C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XX_clean\prefs.js"

Appreciate any advice, thanks in advance!

ETA: First time user here, so please let me know if it's not the right forum for this issue.

Please post a screenshot of Task Manager...which reflects this high usage.

Processes using most RAM are AV, browsers, Skype...which is normal, IMO.  Nothing there looks out of line to me.

You do have a couple of svchost.exe processes running which take about 1GB of RAM, but you have 4GB installed so that should not be a problem.  In short, I don't see any abnormal use of system resources by processes.

NTI Backup Now:  I see some complaints of high CPU usage with this program...I'm not familiar with it (tried it once some time ago, did not think it was better than whatever I was using) but this may account for the svchost process usage, IMO.  Can easily test hypothesis by uninstalling and seeing if high usage persists.

IMO...Bea Tunes and iTunes...would also be candidates for possible removal/explanation of CPU usage.  itunes alone would not be but it seems that these two are somewhat tied together, as best as I can understand what transpires.

Tixati is a torrent client program, which compounds the possibility of having downloaded/installed malware on your system...and also probably increases the CPU cycles used.

Your Event Viewer errors don't tell me much other than the fact that your system has some problems which are pointed in the direction of Bonjour/iTunes.

I would try uninstalling all suspects mentioned...running the system.  If situation persists, I would be more inclined to suggest a visit to the Am I Infected forum.

If I decided to reinstall the above programs...I would do so one by one, checking system function afteer each.  When cpu-usage approaches troubling levels...you have the program responsibile.

Hi Louis,

Thanks very much for your help. I uninstalled NTI backup now, Bea Tunes and Bonjour but there was no change to the CPU usage. Then I looked at task manager again and this time clicked 'show processes from all users'. Turns out that the culprit is a process called WDFME.exe, which was running ~49% at all times.

I uninstalled the WD Smart Ware and everything's back to normal. Not sure what to do when I next use my WD external HDD or need to install the program again to back up my files, but the problem's solved for now.

Appreciate your time and effort on this - you were right, there is a program possible for it (I feared it was my laptop's HDD dying). And noted on Tixati . Thanks again.

Seems many computer users have noted the same thing -- that wdfme.exe uses excessive amounts of CPU resources.

You might want to consider a different backup and storage solution, one that doesn't monopolize the CPU and RAM.

Hi sflatechguy,

Yep, I Googled it and found a lot of complaints... doesn't seem to have any solution as far as I know. It's weird because it still runs long after the HDD is unplugged. For me, the problem is I only bought this external HDD recently, and can't shell out the money for something else. So at this point, this experience isn't giving me a good impression of WD products.

Big thanks to the folks at bleepingcomputer because you've helped me eliminate other possibilities and let me know what the irregular processes are.

You can use the hard drive...without using the problematical software that came with it.

Any USB drive attached to the system is recognized on its own merits and is useable for storage purposes.

As pointed out...there are other backup solutions that work without the problems you have encountered...and they will back up/store to any location recognized by the system.
