laptop freezes up after 10 mins

good day,

 

I have a HP windows 7 laptop that just started to give me problems. after about 10 mins the entire computer freezes up and nothing works. control->alt->delete does nothing, the cursor is frozen, and if you shut the laptop lid and open it again the screen still stays up(does not go into sleep mode).  I then have to unplug the computer and pull out the battery. I was able to run MSE quick scan(as that is just about enough time I have) and it comes back clean. I have also tried running in safe mode and the same thing happens, but maybe takes a little bit longer before it freezes up. I tried to download new window updates which there are available, but when I try to shut the computer off, it freezes up while trying to update.

 

I don't believe the computer is overheating or anything like that, as I can hear the fan running.

 

does this sound like a hard ware issue? 

 

I don't believe its a virus but if it is, can the mods move this to the appropriate forum.

 

any help would be great

Before moving topic, let's see if we can get some data to validate such or refute such.
 

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

 

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

 

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

 

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

 
If system won't allot sufficient time to do both steps...do the Speccy step first, with MiniToolBox later.

You have Norton Internet Security...and MSE installed.  I suggest uninstalling all Symantec apps and using MSE and the Windows firewall.

 

Your java install is outdated, making system more vulnerable to existing malware capable of exploiting outdated versions of java.

 

You also have a McAfee Security Scan process running, SSScheduler.exe              Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee Security Scan\2.1.121\SSScheduler.exe, I suggest removing this by running the McAfee uninstall tool.

 

Your Windows Search errors...may be able to be overcome by turning off indexing...then restarting it later.

 

I believe your major issues will be addressed if you eliminate the potential conflicts between MSE, McAfee, and Symantec applications.  You might run the chkdsk /r command after making the adjustments I suggested to eliminate suspected conflicts.

Louis,

 

I have now removed all Symantec(Norton) programs, Mcafee, and downloaded the latest Java.  I also ran a diskcheck.  It did look like it ran just a couple of minutes longer BUT it froze up yet again!

Well...it doesn't appear that the CPU temperature is excessive, considering that this is a notebook.

 

Reported data for hard drive appears OK, as best as I can determine.

 

Run chkdsk /r again...then post a new snapshot, please.

Even if the fan is running Id still dust it out anyway. Ive seen countless laptops shut off from having too much dust in them. Now from what Ive been reading, I would reseat the RAM and run HP Hardware diags also. Depending on the model, you should be able to access the diags utility either in BIOS or by pressing ESC for the option which should be F9. Again it depends on the model.

I ran  chkdsk /r and it came back with no errors.  I tried to post a snap shot but I am unable to. am I supposed to use speecy to post it? how do I post the snapshot?

Louis, I did try what bory504 suggested. I turned on the computer and pressed the ESC key and then F2 system diagnostics. I then ran a "hard disk test" and this is what came up.....

 

testing drive 1

SMART Check: passed

short DST: failed

 

failure ID: U8E00C-59M6QW-Xd003F-60URO3

product ID: XH066UA#ABA

 

Hard Disk Test : FAILED.

 

does this sound like my HDD is shot?

I'd say so...it certainly looks like the wise thing to do would be to backup valued data files and replace the hard drive.  At least, that's my approach when observintg any vailure of a reliable hard drive diagnostic.
