I have someone in the office using outlook 2013 and the have a lot of big distribution lists embedded in other large distribution lists. She has been editing contacts, but they will not update in the lists by wither the button or the hot key combo.

Sorry, but you didn't provide many details on exactly what you are trying to do. Hopefully this will help: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/create-and-edit-a-contact-group-formerly-distribution-lists-HA010354963.aspx

Sorry again, I meant the contact in the distribution group doesn't update.

Is this an Exchange account? Is the Exchange server on premise, is it hosted Exchange, or is it Exchange Online? Or are you using another email provider?

This does seem to be a known issue in Outlook 2013. Is she trying to do a bulk delete/edit? It appears the workaround is to save after changes are made to each individual contact.

No, it is not exchange. Using another mail provider. And the contacts are in  outlook, not the mail account.

She is trying to remove email addresses from contacts, and she removes the address, and saves it, but when you look at the contact from the list it didn't pick up the update.

When she opens the contact, have her right click on the email address and try deleting it that way. Part of the problem may be that she needs to go to the actual contact itself and edit it there, rather than try to edit it from the distribution group.

Maybe posting some screenshots would help.

She does edit it from the actual contact. The changes don't apply themselves to the list

Now I've got it.

This from Microsoft (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/bbd2b918-a80b-4483-8bbf-e191ed486f10/outlook-2010-shared-contacts-are-not-in-address-list-groups-dont-automatically-update-when?forum=outlook): "There is no reliable tie between the entries in a Distribution List ... and the contact records. The "Update Now" button may work, but..."

In other words, she'll have to make the change in both the contact AND the distribution group, as they don't sync up for some reason.
