it categorizes my printer as an "unspecified device" and won't let me make it a printer.

Did you install the printer drivers/software?

Per the Canon website, "

There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver."

They should be able to use the Windows 7 drivers.  If those do not work for the OP, welcome to Planned Obsolescence.

Apparently I am SOL.  Tried to add the Windows 7 driver and couldn't.  Found info on the Canon website that the Selphy model printers are not compatible with Windows 8.  I can still print my photos direct from my camera but not the ones I have on my pc that have been edited.  Hate Windows 8 and can't believe I am stuck with this crappy OS since my Windows 7 laptop died last year.  If I wanted to work with an app based OS, I would use my iPad.

You are not stuck with Windows 8.  You have the choice to downgrade to Windows 7, by purchasing a copy, or go with a Linux Distro.  No one is holding a gun to your head, to stay with Windows 8.  Only reason I am using it, is because one of my IP Cameras from Foscam, the plug-in for Chrome, is not compatible with Linux, so I am stuck using Windows 8, if I wish to access that camera's administration features.
