My computer is a lenovo ideapad u310, bought a little over a year ago - the warranty is expired - and running Windows 7 Home Premium

About 5 days ago, I tried to open an excel file (microsoft office 2010) and received an error message saying there wasn't enough memory.

I then tried to open a word document - it just fades and says that it's stopped working, then says it can't open but doesn't send a report and nothing is listed in the event viewer!

Powerpoint also doesn't open.

Adobe Reader is not working properly - it will open documents only in unprotected mode but won't let me edit the documents.

My youcam is not working at all - when I click on it, the mouse rotates for a few seconds, then just turns back to an arrow.

Shockwave flash in the chrome browser doesn't work.

When I restart the machine I get several error messages - verifyhost.exe, lenovoreg.exe and sacpl.exe unable to start correctly.

There are MANY bootshieldsvc errors in the event viewer upon each startup.

I have spent literally hours trying to figure out what the problem is and have come up empty!

Does this sound like a virus or more of a hardware issue?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!!  By the way, I don't have a lot of computer knowledge so please spell out any specific steps I need to take to give you more information!

I would like for you to run two scans, chkdsk /r, and sfc /scannow.

Click on the Start orb startorb_zps06e1f985.png , type in cmd in the Search programs and files box.  When cmd is seen in Programs above the Search box right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

You will see a screen similar to the one below.

Screenshot2.jpg

Type in chkdsk c:/r then press Enter.  Please notice the space between the chkdsk and the /r.

You will receieve the message "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>".

Type in Y and press Enter.

Restart your computer to start the scan.

This will take a while to run, please be patient and allow it to complete the scan.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Click on the Sart orb startorb_zps06e1f985.png and type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.

A page similar to the one below will open.

commandprompt_zps212bc71a.png

Type in sfc /scannow and then press Enter to start the scan.  Please notice the space between sfc and the /scannow.

If the scan finds no integrity  problems in the first portion of the scan it should stop, to be sure that the scan has stopped wait five minutes, then type in exit and press Enter to stop the scan.

Please provide the following after running the two scans.

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

speccy7_zpsfa02105f.png

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

speccy3_zps1791b093.png

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

 Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

This problem looks like it is related to Lenovo Fast boot service.  We can test this by disabling this service.

Click on the Start orb, then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

cmd will appear above the search box under Programs, right click on it and choose Run as administrator.

The elevated command prompt will open, it will look similar to the image below.

elevatedcommandpromptw7_zpseba8c499.png

In the elevated command prompt copy and paste the following:

sc stop "NSDSvc"

sc config "NSDSvc" start= disabled

Then press the Enter key.  After this is done type in exit and press Enter.

It says "[SC] open service FAILED 1060"

The specified service does not exist as an installed service

Enter the BIOS by pressing FN and F2 immediately after pressing the power button.

To navigate in the BIOS you will need to use the up or down keys, you will need to use the + or - keys to change values.

Once in the BIOs, navigate to the Intel Rapid Start and press Enter.  A submenu will open, disable the first entry.

Press F10 to save and exit, you may be prompted to confirm this by pressing the Y key, do so.

Ok I was able to make that change in the BIOS.

It doesn't seem like anything has changed - still get error messages on startup and still not able to start any office apps.

Thanks again for your help with this!

One of the System errors is "Description: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

cdrom".  This is interesting since that computer doesn't have an optical device.

What may be happening here is the "missing cdrom" could be causing the POST (Power On Self Test) to stop because of this error.

Look in the Device Manager to see if there are any errors, yellow exclamation mark, or red X.

An after thought.

Do you have a USB CD/DVD drive plugged into this computer?

The registry value for the missing CD-ROM should be 1.  This value could have changed  when a USB optical drive is plugged in.

If this is the case the value will need to be changed to 3.

Have you had any experience with editing the registry?

I wondered about that too.  No I don't have a USB cd/dvd drive connected to this computer.

I looked in the device manager but didn't see anything like you described.  I clicked on every + sign but didn't see any errors, exclamation points or x marks.

I've never edited the registry.  So far I've successfully avoided doing that but, at this point, I'm willing to try anything you suggest, as long as you spell it out for me!!

Thanks again!

What I'm proposing is a registry edit.  There is an inherent danger is doing this, if mistakes are made during this process it can damage the registry making it impossilbe to boot into Windows.

Because of this you will want to backup the registry before making this edit.

How to backup Your Registry with ERUNT

  • Please download Erunt.
  •
  • For version with the Installer:  Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer.
  •
  • For the zipped version you will need a program like 7-Zip to unzip the file.
  •
  • Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
  •
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERUNT.exe

    Instructions for editing the registry.

    1)  To access the registry click on the Start orb startorb_zps06e1f985.png, then type regedit in the Search programs and files box.

    2)  regedit will appear in the pane above the search box under Programs, right click on regedit and choose Run as administrator.

When the registry opens it will look similar to the image below.  If it isn't click on the diamond to the left of Computer to expand the tree.

    regedt3_zps19fdd28a.png

    3)  To reach the registry key cd-rom you will need to click on the following:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom.  There will be clear diamonds to the left of each option, these will turn black when they are clicked on to expand the tree.  You can see the expanded tree to Services in the image below.

    regedit1_zps6ab60649.png

    4)  Once you have reached the Service key scroll down to cd-rom as seen in the image below.

Please notice the black arrow pointing to the numeral (1), this is the current value.

    regedit2_zps33047ec6.png

In order to change the value double click on Start, a window like the image below will open.

The current value will be highlighted in blue, click on the Delete key, then type in the number 3 and click on OK.
You will immediately see the value change to 3.

    regedit4_zpse45b02bb.png

Once you have finished changing the value go back and click on the black diamonds to close the tree.

Ok, I did all you said to do.  After that,  I restarted the computer, got a couple of error messages from erunt because I asked it to backup the registry on every startup, got the same errors I usually get about verifyhost.exe and sacpl.exe not able to start correctly and the office programs are still not working.

Still see lots of errors from bootshieldsvc in the event viewer upon restart.

    Any other ideas or instructions?

Again, I really do appreciate all your help and effort you've put into this problem!

I'm running short of time.  Tomorrow I will have to take my wife to her physician for her bi-monthly infusion and will be gone until Wednesday or Thursday depending on what has to be taken care of.

I will try to stay in touch via my wife's laptop, but I can't guarantee anything.

My apologies, the wife comes first.

Absolutely - your wife comes first!

I can't thank you enough for all your help already!

Please don't worry about keeping in touch while you're with her - I can wait to hear from you till you get back, even if it's just to say you can't help anymore and I should try something else!

I will try to help in resolving your issue on behalf of dc3, hope everything goes well for his wife. :thumbup2:

The problem seems to be part of a bootshield software as removing it would help eliminate the possible culprit. See this link on information regarding the exe file. See if any changes or improvements after uninstalling it completely.
