Are you talking about the columns in Windows Explorer?

Windows 8 is my first experience with computing, so I can't speak for Vista or anything else.  But I've learned that there's a new feature called "ribbon" that you may have overlooked because it can be hidden.  And since you mentioned "align and auto arrange" that tells me you may not know about it.  Go into "computer" and at the top right of the page there's a tiny arrow next to the q. mark.  That arrow will open the "ribbon" (unless it's already open.)  You can see all that stuff you're probably looking for.  You can mouse scroll that "ribbon" too for more controls. And of course you can just highlight your files and drag them to the desired folder in the navigation pane at the left of that same pg; the navigation pane is where all your libraries and folders are listed.

Other than that potentially useless information, I have nothing to offer.  :)  Good luck.

Thanks for your help it helped a whole lot, I was able to put the navigation bar on the left side, it wasn’t there . I still cant drag the folders in my shared folder and I cant get the align to grid or auto arrange feature. When I right click in my shared folder or in a file I get the dropdown menu for sizing but not to align to grid or auto arrange.

In Vista I could move the folders in my shared around in the order I wanted but now when I try to drag them nothing happens.
