When I download programs, my computer will not let them install. Sometimes there's a vague error message that says something like, program could not be installed. And sometimes it just stays on 50% or so for hours and never installs. I moved a lot of files over to the d drive a while back, but this problem is more of a recent thing. I'm not sure if they're related. Help!

You don't have sufficient HDD space to be installing on the main OS drive (c:). When you try to install them on your D drive, do they install successful or same message/problem?

Also Webroot may be causing a problem installing files. Have you tried disabling or uninstalling it temporarily to see if the problem persists?

I did download it to the d drive, but I just realized I was trying to install to the c drive. Let me see if that works.

Not to mention that even when You install to D: somethings have to go to the C: drive. You will need some free room on C:

It's still doing the same thing.

Agree with Chris.

You need to move data files (videos are a good choice) from the C: partition to the D: partition.

You have plenty of space on D:, you need to use it for data files.  There is absolutely no advantage in having data files on the Windows partition...in fact, it's typically a hindrance.  The only things that need to be on the C: partition all relate to Windows, critical updates, and programs installed (programs don't have to be on C:, but it's better if they are, IMO.

Sounds like you have a corrupted windows installer. Either you can try a system restore to roll back to a date prior to the event happening, or we can try to use the Windows AIO program to fix the installer.

1.If after you try the system restore and it's not successful please download Windows AIO from here.

*If you're not allowed to install it, then you can try this version which is a portable version that can be run off a usb drive.*

2. Click on direct download and see if you can download the program and install it. *I hope you can*

3. Run the program and do steps 1,2,3,4

4. Once those steps are done please start repairs.

5.Please do repairs 1,2,3,20,22,25,26.

6.Please report back any changes.

Log files say she has 12.1 GB of space on the C drive. Why isn't that sufficient space to install programs??

Windows requires atleast 15% of your HDD space to function properly. 15% of 120gb hdd is 18GB free space. You only have 12GB of space available which is below what Windows needs to function properly. I recommend moving anything that's not tied to your C drive to your D drive such as pictures, movies, documents, and etc. Any program you've installed on your C drive will NEED to stay on your c drive due to registry entries that have been made.. Windows usually only takes up maybe 30-40GB max on any installation I believe *someone correct me if I'm wrong*.

Thanks for the insight. I didn't realize that the Windows installation wasn't accounted for. I thought that the "free space" on a drive always accounted for everything installed.

You're welcome. Free space relates to what you have left to use after Windows and programs have been installed.

Any luck with the Installer? Have you tried any method that I provided for you to try? If so, what were the end results?

Ok, so now I am royally confused. So the free space actually IS 12.3 GB, but the problem is that the Windows OS needs 15% of your HDD capacity to function correctly.

Correct? If so, correct me. But if I am correct, why does Windows OS need that buffer space on the HDD? Caches, etc.?
