I seem to have a problem with my computer. I built my own computer with the following specs:

MOBO: Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500k @ 3.4Ghz
GPU: EVGA Superclocked GeForce GTX 670 2GB
RAM: 16 (4x4) GB G.Skill Sniper DDR3
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650W
OS: Windows 7 Professional SP1
HDD: 2x 540GB HDD
SSD: Corsair Neutron Series / (Can't remember other SSD with OS installed)

About 4 weeks ago we had a pretty bad storm here in Florida, and lightning struck nearby and shut down my computer. Since then, I have had problems with the computer. It will start up, but once it gets to the Windows loading screen with the 4 colors coming together, it shuts down as if someone pulled the plug and restarts itself after about 3 seconds. I've looked through the BIOS and have been unable to find any reason as to why the system was shutting down. The CPU was sitting at or below 40 degrees C, and all the voltages looked correct.

At first, I flashed the BIOS to the latest version (2.10) and tried to restart... Same issue. Would shutdown either at the Windows loading screen or after about 2 mins of being loaded into Windows idling. I looked through the BIOS and then realized that I was no longer at 16 GB of RAM, but rather at 8GB. I ran a memtest on the RAM and ran into no problems. I tried each stick of RAM in each slot, also no issue there. When I have all 4 sticks in all the slots, only 2 show. When I have 2 sticks of RAM in their respective slots, they show properly.

That's the first issue. The second issue I'm having is with the shutdowns. Figuring after the BIOS update it could be a simple PSU issue, I bought and replaced my old PSU with a Corsair TX850M 850W. For about a week I had no issues, then just the other day, I've been having the same issues. It will just shutdown and restart if I try to load into Windows or Ubuntu on a USB stick I have.

Again, I've looked through the BIOS with the same result: no issue found. Temperatures are where they should be (under 40 C) and the voltages look fine. I'm afraid my MOBO is shot and if so, am going to have to spend quite a bit of money to get a new MOBO, CPU, and RAM.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

What happens when you boot into safemode?

1. I cannot boot into the computer for any extended period of time!

2. Safe Mode doesn't work either... It begins to load all the drivers necessary for Windows to function in Safe Mode, then boom, another shutdown and restart.

Reason I asked about safe mode was to check drivers. Well you just told us it reboots in safe mode as well, so it's not driver related for the video card. The i5 has intel hd 4000 graphics. Can you check and see if Intel HD graphics causes the same issues?

Thing's I've noticed so far:

1.Not driver related as it does it in safe mode as well.

2. Not windows related because it does it with Linux

Things to try:

1.Make sure integrated graphics are enabled in bios

2.Plug in monitor to motherboard and not video card.

3.See if it does same thing.

Also 2.30 is the newest bios version from the official Asrock website ->http://www.asrock.com/MB/overview.us.asp?cat=Download&os=BIOS&Model=Z68%20Extreme4%20Gen3

Try flashing to the newest Bios to see if it makes a difference as well.

Cleared the CMOS the battery way... Much better now, and able to stay in Windows for a little bit and mess around... Flashing BIOS to 2.30 now. Not sure what's going on but hopefully will be fixed!

Also, can't find where to enable integrated graphics in the UEFI BIOS... :(

Try the bios fix first, let us know the results. If that doesn't help then we can try the integrated graphics.

I don't believe windows is the issue here. You said it did it with Linux on a usb stick too? Also motherboard not reading correct ram modules either.

Correct... After clearing CMOS via battery, I needed to do a CHKDSK and a few files were corrupted... During the CHKDSK scan the computer shutdown and restarted again... The RAM issue could be because of the new BIOS flash, perhaps?

New update: loading the Windows 7 CD also ended in a shutdown...

Another update: This has happened before, however after a couple shutdown and restarts, the monitor no longer detects signals from the GPU and goes into power saving mode.

Alright I found your user manual for your motherboard which can be found here. Section 3.4.2 is the north bridge setup which is your gpu. In there you'll see Primary Graphics Adapter. Head to that part in your bios and then select onboard.

*insert from the manual*

Primary Graphics Adapter
This allows you to select [Onboard], [PCI]or [PCI Express] as the boot
graphic adapter priority. The default value is [PCI Express].

Also do you have another CMOS battery you can swap with the one in your motherboard?

You can boot the PC without an HDD attached. You can try this method and see if the PC restarts without a HDD attached. Also you can try another sata connector on your motherboard to see if it makes any difference. If the PC still restarts without a HDD attached, then we're looking at possibly motherboard damage. You said you already tested every dimm module and every slot on the motherboard with memtest according to the op correct?

When you flashed to v2.30, did you follow the exact flashing procedure specified by ASRock in their How To Update instructions?

I do know that some BIOS' require you to set Memory Remap Feature to Enabled in order for it to recognize all 4 sticks. I looked over your manual but didn't see this setting. Not saying it's not there, so double check in your bios to make sure that feature is not disabled.

Hi

Based on where You said

About 4 weeks ago we had a pretty bad storm here in Florida, and lightning struck nearby and shut down my computer.

And given the fact that You said

New update: loading the Windows 7 CD also ended in a shutdown...

As a simple test remove everything except the minimum required for operation. Use only one memory slot, use the built in Video and test. However I believe that You have bad hardware. Most Likely the Motherboard. If it were mine I would try for warranty from the Motherboard maker.

Good Luck

Roger

Everything on the Speccy looks good, no sign of problems...but, as others have pointed out, the lightning strike/shutdown event could have damaged any number of items, CMOS battery, motherboard would be the more likely suspects if I were you.  CMOS battery is a $5 item and a damaged battery could lead to the problems you have described, IMO, so I would definitely replace that.

Did you try a single RAM module in the designated slots?  Did you try each module in the same slot on the board?

Did you/can you run the chkdsk /r , as requested?  Have your removed the SSDs and attached them individually to a second system and tried the chkdsk /r command?

If the file system is damaged beyond repair, mentally prepare for a clean install...and, it's better to have a corrupt Windows than a damaged motherboard, IMO.
