Hi, I'm new here although I'm very well known over at icrontic for my thoughtful and insightful opinions on just about everything.

Got a problem with my main PC, with an Asus M4A78 motherboard, 1055T 6 core cpu, 8 GB ram, and SSD boot drive.

I got a few 256 GB hard drives which have all tested good in Hard Disk Sentinel and HD Tune, and put them in my PC by themselves (no other drives connected), and loaded 7 Pro 64 bit on them.  It does that part fine.

Then I start getting the updates from Microsoft for Windows.  It'll get the first bit with 2 updates and restart, and all is still well, then I'll get the first big wave of ~125 updates, and then the problems begin.  If the PC can even start, it'll just be the desktop screen with no icons anywhere.  And nothing will make them appear until I System Restore back before the updates were put in.

This last time, I let it get the 2 updates and restart, then shut down automatic updating and went and got the 12.8 Radeon drivers for my 7970 GPU (Litecoin mining runs better on older driver versions of certain numbers), and once it got just the 12.8 video drivers installed, and restarted, it was back to the same old problem of a desktop screen with no icons.

Even if I can get into CMD line, in or out of Safe Mode, and try to do sfc /scannow, it doesn't help anything.

So far the exact same thing has happened with 3 different SSDs.  2 were Micron C400 SED drives (yes I meant to put sEd there), and a C300 SSD.

The original boot drive is a Vertex 3 60 GB and it is constantly full, so I have to delete the temporary files a few times a day to be able to do anything.  The Vertex 3 has 7 Home Premium 64 bit on it.

What the hell is going on here?

Whenever I have a large number of updates to install at once, I make the effort to do it manually in date order, a month at a time, earliest first.  This prevents any possible problems with later updates being installed before earlier ones.   It can be a long process depending on how many you need, but worth it vs. the kind of problems you are experiencing.

I began doing this when I had problems myself, and I noticed they weren't always listed in date order, which made me question the order of installation.

Please perform the following, so that we can get the exact specs of your computer. This will better assist us in helping you more.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

The below is for those who cannot get online

Please take caution when attaching a text file to your post if you cannot copy/paste the link to your post, you will need to edit it to make sure that your Windows Key is not present.

Please download MiniToolBox, and save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:

Flush DNS
Report IE Proxy Settings
Reset IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
Reset FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

then I'll get the first big wave of ~125 updates

Sounds like you have either done a recent install or reinstall or haven't updated for quite a while. In any case, there were some Win 7 updates that caused a restart issue on some Win 7 installations and maybe one of them is yours. See this MS advisory for more information:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=38435

Good luck.

Thanks for the ideas.  I do a lot of computer repair work and have loaded 7 many times and this has never happened once until now.

myopinion - that link says it's only for Windows 7 32 bit.  Will it work on my 64 bit?

And yes, it is a fresh install of 7 being done on a formatted SSD / SED solid state drive in all cases.

It is quite maddening that one update can cause such a problem!

It could be a combination of things from seurity software not allowing the restart to an update that is conflicting with your SSD and BIOS. Which is why I asked for the Speccy and the Minitoolbox once you have Windows reinstalled and running where you can use it.

Yes, it does appear to be for the 32 bit security updates so I doubt that it would be of any benefit on x64. However, if it worked before those 125 updates and did not work right after those updates, you are certainly looking in the right area. Anyway, you make reference to using a formatted SSD and I'm not sure what that means because a clean install should take care of that for you and (hopefully) create the proper partition offsets for a perfect SSD alignment. I can also only assume that you set you SSD to run AHCI. Anyway, I don't think either of my observations is the cause of your issue so just continue working with crytpdan and if you don't get your issue fixed, I have a few ideas of my own. Good luck.

Wall of text from Mini Tool Box.  This is with the 60 GB Vertex 3 boot drive back in place, so it may not have the specific problem listed here, though.

Here's the Piriform Speccy results.  This thing is pretty slick, I can see myself using it a lot in the future on systems I work on!  Again, this is with the 60 GB Vertex 3 boot drive back in and everything running fine.

Can you perform the same with the new hard drive and a clean install prior to the 125 updates also provide a screenshot of the updates you get when you do a clean install of Windows 7?

I suggest you update your video drivers from AMD's website. http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

This error it seems is cause by another computer on the network that has the same "COMPUTER-PC" name as the one you're on. You will continue to get this error with TC/IP netbios set to Automaticly to run. It's safe to disable it or you can just change one of the computers names to Computer-pc-2 or something like that.

Error: (10/04/2013 06:30:17 PM) (Source: NetBT) (User: )
Description: The name "COMPUTER-PC    :0" could not be registered on the interface with IP address 192.168.1.3.
The computer with the IP address 192.168.1.2 did not allow the name to be claimed by
this computer.

This next general error is probably do to the massive update that corrupt your system taskhost is a Micorsoft windows host file that gathers all the info of what dll's or drivers needed to load windows and programs. Speccy doesn't go into great detail revealing exactly what is causing this error. You might have to browse more details on that error within the event logs. A lot of these things can be very cryptic. It isn't really taskhost causing the error it's some driver or dll causing taskhost to spit this out.

All my computers have the same name, "Computer", no numbers or anything else to differentiate them.  I have a few mining LiteCoin right now.

I can try having every other computer shut down and off the network at the time this one is loading to see if that helps, and I'll get a Speccy snapshot of it.

Each and every node on a network must have a unique name and unique IP address to function promperly, so I would recommend that you change all your computers names to something unquie even the following:

Computer1

Computer2

Computer3

Computer4

Computer5

And so on and so forth.

That could be why your new installation of Windows is failing to restart after an update.  It is hanging up on network registration due to NETBIOS Naming conflicts.

Its just the way networking is.

Latest Speccy reults from clean computer, fresh 7 Home Premium 64 bit install, no other computers turned on to conflict with the names. I could mention that I have had several computers all named "Computer" turned on at the same time in the past and none have ever shown this problem before or freaking out after the first set of updates go in.

I'm on the computer in question posting this now.
