Hello.

I should say that I know next to nothing about personal computers.  I am using Windows XP Home edition Service Pack 3.

A string of issues came up:

  1. Ccleaner's Registry "Fix Selected Issues" button is dimmed out,
  2. I could not, and cannot, get into "Safe Mode," and,
  3. Automatically Fix File System Errors does not work (the pc re-starts but no check is made)

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

What are you trying to do? Registry cleaning is unnecessary and potentially harmful to your PC.

Howdy!

You might try pressin F8 when your PC is booting. This will take you to a list of different choices for booting. It is time sensitive sometimes so if you see a number countdown just push your pause/break button, now you can take your time to see which boot you want to use. I would begin by picking "Last Known Good Configuration"  or something like that.(I would need to shut down to check exact wording) After doing this see if CCleaner is fixed. If not then if you were thinking ahead and since ya say your not too familiar with PCs then hopefully you chose save when CCleaner asked if you want to save your registry before doing the registry fix. If you saved it then you'll find it in your Downloads. It's a file that will start with "cc"  and the date, here is a copy of todays CCleaner registry saved "cc_20131001_045920". If you saved your registry just choose the date that your PC worked before your CCleaner Registry fix and reload your past settings.  See if any of these help . If not then post what you've tried so far.

                                                             Good Luck !!

While CCleaner is safe and useful for removing temporary and junk files, I do not recommend using the built-in registry cleaner unless you have a good understanding of the registry. In fact, This site DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:

Why you should not use Registry Cleaners and Optimization Tools

Please follow the instructions provided by hamluis.

You have both Kaspersky Internet Security and Bit Defender AV install...please uninstall one.

You don't seem to believe in installing Windows critical updates.

You have Hitman Pro installed, I suggest uninstalling it.

Moving topic to Am I Infected forum.

OK, how is it now? Did you do what hamluis suggested?

Was this a part of CCleaner?

Automatically Fix File System Errors does not work (the pc re-starts but no check is made)

If so Uninstall CCleaner thru Control Panel and reboot.

Ccleaner's Registry "Fix Selected Issues" button became dimmed out at the same time that "Automatically Fix File System Errors" stopped working.

I will uninstall Ccleaner.

Thank you.

For removal of Temp / Junk Files, please use a specialist program like this (Much Safer).

Please download TFC, or Temp File Cleaner By Old Timer
Usage Instructions:
* Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
* Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
* Double-click on the TFC icon.
* When the program opens, click on the Start button.
* TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
* When done, press OK and reboot your computer if required to finish the cleanup.

Thank You -
