I am running Windows XP SP3 on a HP Mini netbook. The machine began to freeze up whenever it tried to update any files including windows updates. I started getting the "Low Disk Space" notification and it would prompt me to clean up the disk. I removed about 16 GB of photos from the machine on to an external drive about 2 weeks ago and that allowed me to get everything up to date.

Without putting any new information on the computer myself it has now filled up all of that empty space and is now telling me I have 0mb of free space on C: drive. I thought maybe I had an infection of some sort so I tried to run Malwarebytes which needed to update. I had to uninstall a browser and Google Earth to get enough space to update the program. I started the program running and am already getting the 0mb of free space notification again. I don't know what else I can delete to make room and I don't know what program or malware might be using up the space. It is a 149GB HDD and it says I have used all of it up.

Any ideas would be great.

I only have 1 partition on the drive, so expanding the partition will not help.

Please perform the following, so that we can get the exact specs of your computer. This will better assist us in helping you more.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

The below is for those who cannot get online

Please take caution when attaching a text file to your post if you cannot copy/paste the link to your post, you will need to edit it to make sure that your Windows Key is not present.

I had to remove a few files in order to install Speccy on the computer. Here is the Snapshot.

The free space I made for this (113mb) is already gone, the computer reports 0mb available.

Please download and run Temp File Cleaner and run it. Do you have restore points active?

The machine keeps shutting down System Restore due to not having enough memory to operate it. However, Advanced System Care has a rollback feature that is active. I will run the temp cleaner.

I ran TFC and was delighted to see 760mb free space but after 10 minutes of sitting on the table doing nothing, we are now down to 470mb.

The system also has Roxio Back On Track, I guess that is another system restore program.

Remove Advance System are as it is a useless program. Also remove Roxio and disable System Restore via right clicking on My Computer then go to Properties and go to Restore Tab.

Done!

After completing those tasks and deleting all the associated files with Avanced System Care and Roxio Back on Track, we are up to 612MB of free space.

What Anti-Virus do you want to use? All you need is on, and many gigs of stuff is located within the account Rebecca? Can you go to My Computer > C: > Documents and Settings right click on Rebecca and select properties and post the resulting size.

You need either a larger...or an additional hard drive for storage space.  The Windows partition needs about 15% of total partition to be free space in order for Windows to function effectively.

I guess the problem is then, what is taking up 149GB of space. I have removed all sorts of things from the machine and have no music, videos, or mass quantities of any files that should be taking up the space on this drive. There is no reason for why the drive should  be full. Is there a tool that can tell me what the majority of the space is taken up by?
