My wife has created Word and Exel files on her computer. Now there is a problem with Office 2010. It won't update. If I uninstall and reinstall it will it affect any of her files?

It should not. To be on the safe side, you may want to backup the files to a flash drive or external drive. It should not be necessary as uninstalling Office should not touch user files, I always tend to take the "cover my rear" (PG version used) approach to be on the safe side.
