How do I start my computer in safe mode?

Very basic question I know.

I want to run the Avast uninstaller program and directions say to start computer in safe mode.

Boot the system and as soon as it starts begin tapping the F8 function key. This will take you to the advanced boot options screen. From there you can select Safe Mode.
