Hi,

My name is Mike! I'm not sure if I'm in the right Forum, but I will try!

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3!

I have 4 USB ports and none of them work! Not sure if all 4 could stop working at the same time. I did a Windows update. Also went to the Dell website to check for updates. I went into Device Manager to see if there was any errors showing next to the USB, no errors! I also tried to update the USB Driver, but it says its already up to date. I went to Dell website and ran a Diagnostics check and it said the USB ports are working fine! I'm not sure what else I can do besides replacing them. So I came to this site seeking help! Would anyone know what else I can try or do I have to replace them?

I hope I gave enough information!

Thank you in Advance,

Mike

Hi, is it a newly installed XP? Did you install the chipset driver from here?

XP was already installed on the computer. I did just install Internet Explorer 8 and Service Pack 3. But the USB problem happened before I installed IE8 and Service Pack 3. I Installed the chipset driver from your reply and the USB ports work sometimes (it shows the device). I plugged in a Flash Drive and it shows up. I went to Device Manager and it says "USB Mass Storage Device----No Drivers are Installed for this Device".

Do I need to do anything else?

Try running a Linux live disc (Ubuntu or Puppy Linux) that is bootable to check if your external devices are able to connect in Linux environment. A tutorial site can be found here.

What happens when the device is recognized on this part? What particular usb devices do you refer?

I was using a flash drive. It will light up and act like it is recognized, but it does not show up in the my computer location.

I figured out how to use Linux. (I was doing it wrong, but tried again and did it right)

SDA2

Mounting volume... OK

Processing of $MFT and $MFTMirr completed successfully.

NTFS volume version is 3.1.

NTFS Partition /dev/sda2 was processed successfully.

Than I got this for SDA1 and SDA3.........

Mounting volume... Failed to startup volume: Invalid argument.

FAILED

Attempting to correct errors... FAILED

Failed to startup volume: Invalid argument.

Volume is corrupt. You should run chkdsk.

I'm not sure how to run chkdsk!

Let me know what I need to do!

Thanks,

Mike

The fail and error report points to your system drive. Were you able to mount your flash drive (sdb1) and recognize under puppy? The chkdsk for windows can be run by right-clicking the partitions and use the windows error checking tool to scan on reboot if required within Windows only.

:exclame: If the computer under windows is still working properly, backup your data first then run the error checking tool and post the result. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ph/windows-vista/check-your-hard-disk-for-errors

How to obtain hard drive S.M.A.R.T data on a Windows system and then paste the report into a forum post

  • Download the GSmartControl installer application:
    • Go to the GSmartControl - Downloads page.
    • Scroll part way down the page to where the current version available for download will be displayed.
      gsmartcontrolwindowsdownload.jpeg
  • Double-click the downloaded application to run it and install GSmartControl on the computer.
Note: Vista/Win7 users, right-click > Run as Administrator
  • When installation is complete, run GSmartControl:
    • Start GSmartControl from the Start > Programs menu.
  • When the interface has loaded and scanning for hard drives is complete, click on the hard drive icon to select the device.
  • Go to Device on the top menu > View Details, and a new Device Information window will open.
  • Click on the Attributes tab to display the S.M.A.R.T data values.
  • Near the bottom of the window, click on View Output and a new Smartctl Output window will open.
  • Right-click anywhere inside that window > Select All.
  • Again right-click in that selected area > Copy.
  • Now paste that in a reply to your topic.
Note: Please enclose the pasted report in CODE tags so that the spacing/formatting is preserved (to make it easier for all to read).
    • Firstly, click on the "Insert code snippet" button insertcodesnippetdetail2.jpeg
    • You will then see the "start" and "end" code tags (highlighted in dark blue/selected in the image) in the text box.
    • Click between the two tags to insert the cursor between the tags and then press <Ctrl+V> to paste the report there.

Yes the flash drive worked and was recognized under puppy!

I ran the chkdsk for windows, but I don't know to find the results to post. It had to scan after a reboot.

Ok. The Hard drive looks fine on SMART initial test results and since the flash drive was able to run perfectly in Linux, try removing USB controllers as suggested in this link by scrolling down to Remove and Reinstall all USB Controllers. See if it corrects the problem. A Reboot would reinstall all uninstalled controllers.

I cannot uninstall the USB controllers. I click uninstall than confirm device removal shows up than I click ok and nothing happens. In Windows Task Manager it says "Device Manager is Not Responding". Is there another way to uninstall the USB Controllers?

Let's check what USB related errors are shown this time.

Download MiniToolBox and run the program. Select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

I click uninstall than confirm device removal shows up than I click ok and nothing happens

Proceed with reboot and see if windows would find and reinstall the particular usb controller. Not sure by what it means 'nothing happens'.

When I followed the instructions in the link you gave me to uninstall the USB controllers, they will not uninstall! I just get an hour glass and device is not responding. I have to end the task. I did a reboot but I guess if I can't uninstall the USB controllers they won't reinstall after a reboot.
