Ok so earlier this month I was searching for some stuff and I was re-directed to a site that was rather unsavory, but I digress, it said something about "please wait while we check your browser" and a red blah went up in my mind so I exited out of Firefox. Ever since hat my computer has been kinda buggy so today I ran avast and it picked up several java exploits, one of them was cve 2013 and I think it mentioned something about remote accesses and I'm kinda scared idk if people have been Stealing my data or like I've heard of the NSA using exploits to track people and....I digress, I'm just really worried (understandably) and I'm also curious if this all stems from a problem I had way back and if something keeps lurking on my computer. Though, avast didn't give me an alert when I went to the site.....so now I'm scared..yeah. So any help would be appreciated.

After I scanned with avast on a boot-time scan my computer restarted (don't know if I found anything I was away for most of the scan) and when it restarted for a brief moment it displayed the "this copy of windows is not genuine" watermark when I know full we'll it is genuine, I fear this might be a root kit or boot kit.

Also there is constant disk activity now.

First, fully shut down when not in use (do not use Hibernate or Stand By).

I must ask for the baisc scans first -

Download Security Check by Screen317
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If any security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Download MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Close any Firefox browsers you may have open
Checkmark the following boxes:
•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files
Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).

..............................................................................................................................

Now read How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them.
NOTE : You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.

If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.

A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.

If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.

Do not reboot until instructed.

If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

.......................................................................................................................

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free (aka MBAM)
* Double-click MBAM -setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to Check for Updates to be so it is current
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Scan, then click Quick Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* NOTE : You may be asked to Reboot to fully remove any found infections.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.
* If you are not sure of any items, post the log and ask if it should be removed.

.......................................................................................................................

Please Download TDSSkiller
Launch it.
Click on change parameters-Select TDLFS file system
Click on "Scan".
Please post the LOG report(log file should be in your C drive)

Do not change the default options on scan results.

.........................................................................................................................

Scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

This is best done with Internet Explorer, as it uses ActiveX
1. Hold down Control and click HERE to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
2. Click the ESET Online Scanner button.
3. NOTE :.For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

- 1. Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
- 2. Double click on the ESET Online Scanner icon on your desktop.

 4. Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
 5. Click the Start button.
 6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
 7. Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives"
8. Click Advanced settings and select the following:

Scan potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth technology

 9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this will take some time to download the program for a first time, and then download updated data base (1 to 2  hours is not unusual)
10. When the scan completes, click List Threats
11. Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan.
- Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
12. Click the Back button.
13. Click the Finish button

Now make sure all Anti virus / malware is activated again -

Thanks -

After all of the above, please read and follow any directions here -

Exploit:Java/CVE-2013-0422 - This is the full name.

What to do now
To detect and remove this threat and other malicious software that may be installed on your computer, run a full-system scan with an appropriate, up-to-date, security solution. The following Microsoft products detect and remove this threat:
Microsoft Security Essentials (if you disable your Antivirus) or, for Windows 8, Windows Defender
Microsoft Safety Scanner

Update Java
Make sure that you install all available updates from the vendor in order to avoid this exploit. You can read more about this vulnerability and download software updates from these links:
CVE-2013-0422
Java Download

Remove older versions of Java
You should remove older versions of Java that are still present. Keeping old and unsupported versions of Java on your system presents a serious security risk. You can read more about why you should remove older versions of Java in the following article:
Remove older versions of Java

Clear the Java cache
A detection for this exploit may be triggered from your Java cache if a previous attempt at exploit has been made. We recommend that you delete all your temporary Java files to prevent a persistent detection of this exploit. For instructions on how to delete temporary Java files, please see the following article:
How do I clear the Java cache?

Thank You -

Ok, I squashed most of the nasties. I also uninstalled Java because I was sick of that, so does uninstalling Java clear the cache? I am this close (imagine fingers with small space inbetween) to switching to linux, I'm no longer a big gamer becasue of school and linux has everything I reallly need, and a few AAA titles on steam for linux can tide me over, but I want to get this fixed first.

so does uninstalling Java clear the cache? < Basically, yes.

If you play certain games, you will need Java, but as long as your computer is clean, you should be OK

My Java Auto updates (both XP and 7) as I have it set that way, plus I check while helping others.

If you think there "may" be a chance that it had already infected something, the scans are all listed for you to check with.

Thanks -

Run a Disk Check on your C: drive in Windows Vista or Windws 7:
• Click the Start button and select Computer
• Right-click on C:or your main hard drive letter, and select Properties
• Click on the Tools tab
• Under Error-checking click the Check Now... button and click Continue at the User Account Control prompt
• Mark the 2 boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
• Click on the Start button
• When the message box pops up, click the Schedule disk check button and Restart your computer
• Once your computer restarts it will check the drive, don't press any keys so that it is allowed to do so
Note: This will take (on average) 1 to 2 hours to run, so please let it finish.
Do not force a Reboot during the scan or you will damage installed data -

Ok.. Update. After not knowing way to do with my potentially infected computer, even after scanning several times I just blew away the install and installed ubuntu, mint, fedora, basically used the laptop as a test bed for linux distros up until about jan 10th 2014. Then I swapped out the hard drive, cleared BIOS, flashed a new BIOS (overly cautious) and installed windows 7 home premium using the OEM key on the underside, got all my software set up again and since I have since gotten a "new" hand-me-down laptop from my sister, (2012 core i7 nvidia 1.5gb graphics, 750GB windows 8) I have been just using my old laptop as a test bed for virtual machines (upgraded ram to 6gb) and fiddling around with audacity. Furthermore, with the addition of a desktop (core i5, AMD HD 6870 1GB, 500GB hd, windows 7 Ultimate.) I'm pretty much set/don't use my old laptop that much anymore. Just wanted to update you guys on what's happened since las contact. I've been swamped with school work also, and side jobs, fixing computers, helping deploy OEM machines in the field. Etc.
