Hi everyone, let me introduce myself first, my name is Rufus. I have this spyware/virus on my computer and I hope you guys can help me.

-It shows a popup from my taskbar with an alert triangle with the message: Security Alert: Spyware Detected! "System has detected 4 spyware applications that..."

- another popup in a red square saying: "Your computer is infected!"

- it installed 2 icons on my desktop and start menu 'Security Troubleshooting' linking to: //youronlinesecurity.com, and 'Online Security Guide' linking to: //realsecurityonline.com

- it changed my startup page to //www.theguardservices.com/ and causes several popups.

I've tried spysweeper, but it didn't find it, and norton antivirus froze my computer while scanning.
I was searching google for solutions and found this website, where I saw savasg had more or less the same issue and thanks to dahli his problem got solved. I hope someone can do the same for me, it would be great.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum :thumbsup:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri). If you have already downloaded that before, please delete it, because it has been updated.
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore your antivirus may alert you about this. Please allow it.

In your next post, please include
  • smitfraudfix log
  • new hijackthis log
Note: report is saved at C:\ C:\rapport.txt

OK. Nevermind that. I'll give you a new set of instructions where you won't have to do that.

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Start killbox, go to options on the top bar and make sure remove directories is enabled and remove duplicates is UNCHECKED paste the first file listed below into the full pathname and file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcomcfg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole3.tlb
C:\WINDOWS\system32\simpole.tlb

The file name will appear in the window, select delete on reboot , press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and

NO
to reboot now. Then do the same for each file in turn.

[Note: Killbox makes backups of all deleted files & folders in a folder called C:\!killbox ] If Killbox tells you any files are missing don't worry but make a note and let us know in your next reply

Then on killbox top bar press tools/delete temp files, in the pop up box in the NT section select temp & temp internet &

cookies
only and in the 9x section select c:\windows\temp & c:\temp then on the drop down user account box, select your account, then repeat for every user account on the computer

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Hi amateur,

thanks for the new instructions. I was in safe mode all the time so I didn't see them untill now. I did everything you said in the 1st instruction, but instead of with ewido cleaning the files and keeping an encrypted backup, I deleted them, hope that's not too bad.
It all seemed to work when I started my pc up in normal mode again to post the log and rapport up here, but when I clicked on my IE icon it again started the http://theguardservices.com as my startup page and showed a popup window when I entered that website.

Here is the hijackthis rapport made before opening the IE and going to that site again, and the second report is the one after going online to that site again.

Sorry you didn't see it before. You are still infected. This is a new variant and the tool has just been updated. Now that the tool is updated it will be much easier. Please delete the old Smitremfix from your desktop and download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you.

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.

Tutorial for CCleaner

============================================

Check Ewido for updates but do not run it yet.

============================================

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
============================================

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

============================================

From Safe Mode run Ccleaner

Click on Options, Select Advanced Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. (Do not use the "Issues" block) Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything EXCEPT Advanced part of the Menu. Click on "Analyze". This process could take a while.
If you don't want to loose your login passwords to certain sites, click on Options, select cookies and move the ones you want to keep to the "cookies to keep" section, by highlighting and using the arrows in the middle.
Choose Run Cleaner.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.

If you have more than one users, run Ccleaner for every user.

Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

============================================

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
    • Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
    • Under What to scan select Scan every file
    • Click on Ok
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
  • Click Save Report button
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.

============================================

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

============================================

Please post:
  • c:\rapport.txt
  • Ewido log
  • A new HijackThis log
You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Please follow the instructions carefully and in the order they are presented in my post # 11. We'll do the virus scan later.

Hi rufus daniels,

It's looking much better. :thumbsup: The infection is removed. We need to do a little clean up before we secure your system.

You are running a slightly older and vulnerable version of Java.
.
  • Go to Start " Control Panel " Add/Remove Programs.
  • Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... ) and delete them.
    It/they should have this icon next to it/them: Posted Image
  • Then download and install the newest version from here.
=====================================
  • Close all open Explorer windows and browsers/email, etc
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button and when complete
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

============================================

Reboot and please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
1. Click on Kapersky Online Scanner
2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on Accept (after reading the contents).
3. Now Kapersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
4. Click on Next>Scan Settings, and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
5. Then click on "My Computer". And the scan will start.
6. Once finished, save a log as ".txt" to the desktop. And restart.

For Kaspersky's WebScan you may need to set 'Download Unsigned Activex' to Prompt in order to get it to run.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Security tab and select Custom Level. Scroll down and set Download unsigned Active X to Prompt. That should allow the Kaspersky scan to download the Active X after a prompting you.

============================================

Post back the results of the Kaspersky along with a fresh HijackThis log.
