Hello,

I'm trying to diagnose a network problem on a customer's computer, a Dell Inspiron 570 running Win7 Home Premium 64 bit.

When they brought it in and the network would not work, my initial diagnosis was that the on-board network adapter had failed so I ordered a TP-Link Gigabit PCI adapter (TG-3269) and installed it. I've taken great care to use the driver as provided by the manufactorer. On installing this, I also disabled the on-board network adapter.

Nothing has changed in network connectivity. Basically all the symptoms are the same.

If I do an ipconfig /all, I can see that the machine has obtained an IP address, it shows the proper default gateway and DNS server. By looking at the DHCP table on the router I can see this computer listed as a DHCP client.

I can ping localhost, 127.0.0.1 and receive results back, but trying to ping anything beyond the NIC card provides no results (Destination host unreachable).

I downloaded the MiniToolBox and ran with these settings:

Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
List Devices (problems only)

The results are shown below.

I'm beginning to think the problem is not the network adapter but am not sure what else to look at. I appreciate any help that someone might provide on this, but will not be able to respond again myself until late Sunday or Monday (I'm in Mountain Standard time, i.e. Denver).

Thanks!

I assume you are testing this rig on a different router. If so, did you try an ipconfig /release and an ipconfig /renew?

That is a reasonable question and although I have not tried this rig on a different router, I have tried other rigs on this same router. This is my workbench and over the course of time I have many other computers plugged in to this same switch -> router setup and it works just fine. Just to make sure everything was working fine, I rebooted the router and also plugged another machine in to confirm everything is operational.

If it would make a difference, I can certainly try this rig on another router when I get back into the office on Monday.

I did not realize that an ipconfig /release was necessary before issuing an ipconfig /renew. I have not done those two commands in that sequence but have simply attempted the ipconfig /renew. I'm working from memory here but two errors come up. I can't remember the second one but the first one is basically that a connection with the DHCP server cannot be established. This is obviously false since a proper IP address has been obtained and that computer shows up in the DHCP clients list on the router. It makes me wonder if perhaps the computer is receiving incoming packets but not able to send outgoing packets? Not being schooled on all the ins and outs of packets and network communication I'm sure this may sound pretty lame but it was just a guess. I can get the exact error messages for both errors once I'm back in the office on Monday.

Can you try using or putting the default gateway's address in LAN adapter properties DNS server or use automatic DNS server instead? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ph/windows7/change-tcp-ip-settings

Perhaps some additional explanation is in order? The router that this plugs in to (via a switch) has the address 192.168.1.1 and is providing DHCP as well as serves as the gateway. That router is in turn plugged into another router whose address is 192.168.0.1. The 192.168.1.1 router has a fixed IP address and has the DNS hardcoded to 192.168.0.1. The primary (192.168.0.1) router has its IP and DNS settings to be obtained automatically from my IP.

The settings on the computer are set to automatically obtain both the IP address as well as the DNS server. This is the same as with any of the other computers I plug into this subnet whether belonging to a customer or in my classroom or showroom.

I do this because the primary (192.168.0.1) router is what receives the incoming internet signal and is the network on which I run my business computers. I have the secondary (192.168.1.1) router set up to use a subnet so that customer computers on my workbench that may or may not be infected are not able to communicate with and hence cannot infect my business computers. This also helps to keep my business information safe. I also have a series of "classroom" computers that I use in order to conduct training and those computers are generally plugged into the secondary router as well so that even when teaching networking, I don't have the issue of trying to protect my business network.

This all works and has worked with any computer I've plugged into this same switch -> router -- with the exception of this one computer in question.

Can you ping the 192.168.0.1 and 168.1.1 IP addresses? Have you tried safemode with networking?

Edit : It's possible also that McAfee is causing your internet connection problems. Try completely removing the software and use the Mcafee Removal Tool then check the difference.

Can you plug the computer into the primary router to rule out a router conflict, and have you ran any anti-malware tools to rule out malware such as a rootkit that could prevent your underlying Network System within windows from working?

Hello.

I got back to the office today and started to find answers to the questions above when things started to go down hill. After a couple of reboots and an attempt to go into Safe Mode, the computer failed to reboot. Knowing that the customer had specifically asked that I not spend much time on this if adding the network card did not quickly solve the problem, I decided to pull the plug and stop any further diagnostics.

Thanks for your reponses. Unfortunately we'll never know what the problem and/or solution was so this thread may or may not be of help to someone down the road. I thought there were some good ideas on things to try in analyzing a network problem.

I'm not sure how to mark this thread as solved and closed. Although it is not solved, it is certainly closed.
