I'm getting random shutdowns of IE and Explorer, a disappearing start menu, OE new message windows minimising themselves. Help! I've followed your preparatory instructions. Bit Defender says it can't clean or delete 'wininet.dll infected with Trojan.WininetHook.A'. My computer is nearly unusable and I'm stumped.

Hi,

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. We start with the oldest logs first. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.
Then I'll take a look.

Thanks. I get a display glitch, a little flicker, about every five seconds. I get an error window every few minutes: 'explorer has caused an invalid page fault in msvcrt.dll' It shuts down explorer but doesn't affect other programs. I still have the disappearing menu problem.

Here's the new log

Ok, let's deal with malware first before we deal with any other problems. Because as long as malware is present, we can't properly fix everything else as well.

By the way, is your wininet.dll still infected? We'll find out afterwards.

Some important remarks here though..
I notice that you do not seem to be running Antivirus software and a Firewall. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install them first!!

AVG, Avira OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!
Zonealarm, Agnitum Outpost Free OR Kerio are FREE firewalls.

Understanding and using firewalls

* Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right)
Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'
In the field, copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\system\IEFilter.dll

Click open.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. Click Yes/ok
Your system should reboot now.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O21 - SSODL: IEFilter - {FBFAEAE0-D3CE-11DA-8193-00B0D0DD1CEB} - C:\WINDOWS\system\IEFilter.dll
O21 - SSODL: SysTray.Exgr - {5368D1FC-4F5C-4f1b-B134-E67214FC78E9} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\pgoalmje.dll (file missing)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
* Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report together with a new hijackthislog.

Extra note...
Effective July 11, 2006, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me will transition to a non-supported status. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide any incident support options or security updates. Existing support documents, however, will continue to be available through the Microsoft
Support Product Solution Center Web site.

Oh, I forgot to mention. As of now, the problems have gone away.

That's good news... but I still don't see you have installed an Antivirus and firewall, this is really important.
You are/were dealing with A LOT more than is visible in your log, that's why I really need you to run an online scanner and need the log, because A LOT will be still present.

Check and fix next entry in hijackthis:

O21 - SSODL: IEFilter - {A6A581CB-D887-11DA-8193-00B0D0DD1CEB} - C:\WINDOWS\system\IEFilter.dll (file missing)

* Download: Hoster
Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\Hoster
Start Hoster.exe, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE, then click "OK"
7. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
8. When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
9. Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Hi Mark, Is there any reason why you still didn't install an antivirus and firewall?
How are you supposed to prevent malware in the future?
Anyway, is your wininet.dll still infected? Because we really need to fix that.

To find out, perform next:

* Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.
* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Post the contents of smitfiles.txt which is present on your Homedrive (C:\ in most cases)

Hmm; the smitremlog shows your wininet.dll is clean though.

Let's find out..

Go to next site:
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\Windows\System\wininet.dll

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Is Antivir able to clean it? A reboot is needed to clean it.
Let me know.

What options do you have? You may NOT delete that file or quarantaine it - it needs to get disinfected/cleaned, because wininet.dll is a necessary part of windows and without it, you won't be able to run some programs properly. No wininet.dll also means no explorer not to load anymore.
