I just had to purchase a new laptop and have been fighting with Windows 8 for the first time.  I imagine i won't use most of the apps that are preloaded with W8 so i'd like to uninstall the ones i don't need.  is there a comprehensive list of all the W8 apps that gives a brief description of each one to save me the hassle of opening each app to find out what it does before i decide if i want to uninstall it?

Not really.  I wiped off the Norton stuff, Office preview, Wild Tangent, Toshiba Books and Toshiba video on my Toshiba Satellite.  All the little Metro icons in the metro screen are a part of the OS, so you really cannot remove all together, but you can uninstall.  Now of course, you can go into C:\Program Files\WindowsApps and uninstall Metro apps from there (You have to take ownership of the file, but do not do a "Replace owner for folder and sub containers" when you do it).  The other location would be C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Application Shortcuts and remove the shortcuts that show up on the Metro screen also.
