2 nights ago I was trying to download SQL Manager to open a .db file (downloaded from download.com). Immediately after this, I couldn’t get the program to run after install so went to uninstall it. Supposedly it worked and I decided to uninstall another unneeded program. Froze up, I rebooted and now in home screen was an icon for some search thing (forgot the name). Went to uninstall this and seemed to work but then went online and google chrome browser defaulted to search.conduit.com. Exited out and went to run an AVG Scan. AVG wouldn’t open, kept getting “Windows Explorer has stopped working and needs to restart” and click to restart. Screen would refresh but kept getting same error when trying to run AVG. Booted in safe mode and tried from there…nothing. Completed a System Restore back to when I updated to AVG 2014. Still didn’t work, and now unable to uninstall anything (including AVG). Tried disabling AVG in Safe Mode and this didn’t help either. Tried Start Up repair options instead of fully going into Safe Mode and nothing worked there (2 scans showed no errors). Also ran CMD sfc /scannow with no issues being detected. Now can no longer complete a System Restore (was going to try going further back in time). Get an error saying it was not completed for an unspecified reason. Also, I can no longer get on the internet. GRRR!

I’m about to throw the dang thing out the window….

Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.

OR

Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
Click on the enter key.

Reboot your system to complete the process.

If that works ... reboot to Safe Mode with Networking and run these.

If no Net try putting them on a Flash drive or CD and running from there.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS

The conduit engine is related to the µTorrent/BitTorrent browser bar. If you uninstall the browser bar, it should kill Conduit engine too.

Good good

In Control Panel Uninstall
Java 7 Update 25 (Version: 7.0.250)

Java™ 6 Update 22 (Version: 6.0.220)

Java™ 6 Update 35 (Version: 6.0.350)

Reboot

I'd like to run one more and it may take a few hours.

Last run ESET.
  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
  • Scan potentially unwanted applications
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

Uninstall is the only thing that still isn't working at this point. I click "Uninstall" and nothing happens (won't even bring up program list). In Safe Mode, the program list will come up, but nothing happens when I try to uninstall. Should I try ESET first? I'm going to try Revo Uninstaller to get AVG off and the things you noted above, then I'll try ESET.

Run ESET and then this anyway

Please run SFC (System File Checker)
Please run System File Checker sfc /scannow... For more information on this tool see How To Use Sfc.exe To Repair System Files

NOTE for Vista/WIN 7 users..The command needs to be run from an Elevated Command Prompt.Click Start, type cmd into the Start/Search box,
right-click cmd.exe in the list above and select 'Run as Administrator'

You will need your operating system CD handy.

Open Windows Task Manager....by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC

Then click File.. then New Task(Run)

In the box that opens type sfc /scannow ......There is a space between c and /

Click OK
Let it run and insert the CD when asked.

sfc /scannow didn't find anything (also didn't ask for CD).

ESET still running at 73% with nothing found so far. Oh, and I tried Revo and it wouldn't work, says "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." it's weird, AVG doesn't even come up in the list of installed programs on Revo.

There were 3 threats found but I clicked export and nothing happened. It said report was stopped by user so I think my 2 year old clicked something while I was out of the room (SIGH...). I'll try running it again. I do know one said multiple threats and one was an application that said it was probably WIN32Installer.

Edit..found the report
