On Saturday my computer inexplicably stopped connecting to the internet and when I tried opening the Network & Sharing Center, it would freeze. Same thing when I tried to open the control panel or do any troubleshooting.

After many safe mode reboots, virus scans, searches on google, etc. I finally gave up and went through a complete restore to factory state. I backed my files up on an external hard drive. When I restored the computer, I replaced all my files in their original locations and went about my business. I went through all the Windows updates, installed Microsoft Security Essentials, Chrome, and Firefox. Everything was fine until Nvidia popped up saying the drivers needed updating. After rebooting from that update, the same issues as before popped back up. No internet, couldn't start any troubleshooting efforts, etc.

I thought maybe whatever the problem was intially was in my backed up files, so I restored again and this time didn't reinstall my backup. As of this moment, the only programs on the computer that were not part of the initial factory load up or Windows updates are Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Malwarebytes. The exact same issue has happened again and now I just don't know what to do. The scans have not found anything, and I am totally baffled.

The current state of the computer is that when I try to do a normal startup, Windows loads to a blank screen.  On ctrl+alt+del the proper Windows screen and menu options show up, but when I select Task Manager it goes back to blank.

This is what happens when I try to run Speccy:  http://imgur.com/tCSZ38h

I can only run it from Safe Mode because of the problems booting into Normal Mode.  I'm not sure if that's the problem or not.

Try to run the chkdsk /r command.

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter.  Type Y in new screen, hit Enter.  Reboot...the command will run before attempting to boot into Windows.

It said the type of volume is NTFS. The volume is clean. It was super fast. Is that how it's supposed to work?

Booted into normal startup just for funsies, still a blank screen with only the cursor showing.

No...not for me. The sequence I described it what should occur, IME.

Try it a different way.

Start/Computer...right-click on C:, click Properties. Click Tools tab, push Check now button. Put checks in both options...click Start or hit Enter. Click Schedule Disk Check, click OK. Reboot.

That method worked.  The check disk ran for a few hours and just completed.  However, there were no errors and nothing has changed.  When it completed it booted back to normal mode with a blank screen again.  I would think it's possibly a hardware issue, but both times I restored the computer to the factory state, everything worked beautifully while I downloaded the initial programs (Chrome, Firefox, and MSE).  It wasn't until those were installed and I was starting to install the other programs I use that problems kicked in both times.

Everything was fine until Nvidia popped up saying the drivers needed updating. After rebooting from that update, the same issues as before popped back up. No internet, couldn't start any troubleshooting efforts, etc.

Is it a Windows Update? Did you try removing this installed drivers completely and use the old/new/correct or stable versions?

The first time I had a problem, it was right after I installed a Flash update for Firefox.  I was clicking quickly and accidentally agreed to install the extra program (Norton, I think), so I tried to go back quickly and uncheck that box.  But I thought it was possible I was too slow and got a little something extra on my computer.  However, it's not like Adobe is a company of ill-repute, so the idea of getting a virus from them seemed a little unlikely.

After the first restore, it happened right after installing Diablo III and the Nvidia update.  (I can't recall exactly.  I was in a flurry of installations trying to get the computer back to normal because I thought the problem was fixed.)  The Nvidia update was not part of a Windows Update - it was from Nvidia's own updater.

The second restore I was much more methodical about and just trying to get the basics up and running to see if I could pinpoint the issue.  I can't even recall what I had been installing before the problem popped up again.

Every time it's happened, it's followed a different pattern, and come after an installation from a really well-known and trustworthy company, as far as software goes.  That's what got me wondering if it's hardware, except for the fact that everything works fine for a little while after the system restore.

I'm not sure why there are a bunch of foreign language Windows Live elements installed, unless that's just part of the process?  Seems weird to load up with all those, however, when most people only need one or two languages available.

So...I don't know.  I'm baffled and I don't know how else to look for help since there's nothing specific I can nail down as a consistent symptom, other than the inability to connect to the internet and the computer freezing when trying to open the network center or control panel programs.  And now I've just got the blank screen in normal mode.

I was doing some research on this and tried the boot from last known good configuration in the F8 menu, and that has worked.  I got the speccy snapshot, but I'm sort of afraid to go about installing anything or rebooting now.  Those actions haven't worked well for me this past week.

Clearly...something serious is wrong with this system...but I can't tell you what it is from what has been posted.

A clean install dated 23Sep...should not reflect any problems..

I suggest checking that the system is not infected (first)...then checking the hardware items that can be checked (second)...and last, the technique/source of the install effort.
