Last night when I came back to my desk, I found someone remotely controlling my computer.   They had a browser open, were trying to access someone's data at a credit reporting site.  When I started controlling the mouse, the perpertrator tried to shut down the computer (they shut down menu popped up), but I prevented it.  It then looked like s/he disconnected.  I saw a brief flash of a window, maybe something saying "Personal Network" (?).

After that, I tried to track down what was going on.  I ran netstat and saw some suspicious connections to IP addresses in listed under "Chinanet" (from a Whois look up).  The connections were to a process running under services.exe.

I've been running Comodo Firewall for quite a while so I thought that I was protected.  I did download a BitTorrent app a few months ago, and after I installed it, I got the impression that it  was loaded with something bad (but I have no evidence that it was), so  I removed it right away after installing it.

Today, I ran MalwareBytes, it found and removed a bunch of files it categorized as "PUP.Optional.Conduit".   (Based on the online descriptions of that, it doesn't seem like the source of the remote control app.)  After that, I ran HijackThis!, and saw a remnant of the BitTorrent app running as a service, which I then removed it using HijackThis.

Then I ran the DDS.com app.  Below is the DDS log:

  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

I've done all I can with the removal programs I have, but I don't know if I was able to remove the malware or not.

Hello, my name is Elise and I'll assist you with this issue.

What other tools except for Malwarebytes have you run in order to get rid of this problem?

Also, do you know what the following file is: c:\windows\system32\a.reg?

If you don't know, please upload the file to www.virustotal.com and give me the link to the scan results.

regards, Elise

Hi Elise,

Thank you for responding to my post.  I only ran Malwarebytes to remove the malware.  I ran it again last night and it found PUP.optional.ibryte, and removed it.  Also, last night I upgrade my Internet Explorer (which I almost never use) to IE 8, and as part of that install, it ran the Microsoft Malware Removal Tool, but no report came out of that run.

I have been running Comodo Firewall continuously, but that doesn't have a malware removal feature.  I downloaded Stopzilla last night, but did not yet run it.

The file a.reg looks like a registry export from WinVNC (which I use on this machine).  I uploaded it to virustotal.com just to be sure.  The link to the results are:  https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/f94d5874ecbb124c0c59971d20e118fb833e912d8aa2be9ac5c1a2adc822d2c2/analysis/1380632559/

Thank you for the information, please don't run Stopzilla, its unlikely to do any good.
Because RATs are pretty nasty software, even though I don't see any evidence, lets run the following:

We need to run a scan with Combofix:
  • Please go to the download page for ComboFix by sUBs.
  • Click the Download Now button pictured below and save the file to your desktop:

    download.png
  • Disable any anti-virus and/or firewall software you have installed.
instructions can be found here if needed
  • Close all open windows including your web browser
as mentioned in the first post, you may want to print out all instructions before starting
  • Double-click on the ComboFix icon on your desktop. cf-icon.jpg
  • Read the Disclaimer and click I Agree if you want to run the software, then you should see a window like the one below:

    cf-preparing.jpg
  • DO NOT use your computer while ComboFix is running. There are a lot of things going on behind the scenes and a single mouse click can cause the program to stall.

However, if you see the prompt below, please click Yes to download the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

    recovery-console-prompt.jpg

If an Internet connection is not available or you choose not to install the recovery console, ComboFix will run in Reduced Functionality mode
  • Allow ComboFix to reboot the computer if necessary, it will run again after you log back in.
  • When complete, a log file will be displayed, please copy and paste the contents of this file into your next post.

    cf-log.jpg
More information about downloading and using ComboFix can be found here if needed.

regards, Elise

Thanks for the response.  I will try to run ComboFix in a few hours (I am using the computer right now, so I need some time finish up what I'm doing).

Hi Elise -

I ran ComboFix.  It seem to complete normally (well almost, it reported some errors restoring some registry files - I kept clicking Yes to retry).  It rebooted computer, however, on the reboot it did not continue to run and no log file appeared.

Should I run it again?

Could you please run Combofix from Safe Mode instead and see if that works?

I seem to be having trouble booting Windows in Safe Mode.  It hangs while loading the drivers, and never starts.  It starts fine in normal mode.  I tried running ComboxFix again, and again it didn't start up again after the reboot.

I'm pretty sure I still have the malware installed.  Do you have another suggestion?

Please try this:
Press Windows key + R, type combofix /killall in the run box and press enter. Let me know if it runs like that.

regards, Elise

Hi, the log looks good at this point. What problems or suspicious activity are still present at this point?

regards, Elise

I'm not sure if the remote control malware got uninstalled or not.  It was only a few nights ago that I saw someone operating my computer, and I'm not sure any of the software I ran removed something which would be root kit/remote control malware.  (MalwareBytes removed some PUP type items but not sure those were same issue).

Did ComboFix remove any malware?  I saw in the ComboFix log:

        detected NTDLL code modification:
        ZwClose

Does that have any meaning?

Thanks again for your help with this!

Sam

That line is caused by Comodo and nothing to worry about.

What remote activity did you observe exactly (other than already stated in your first post)?

regards, Elise
