Hello,

I am hoping someone with more experience than me out there may be able to help. The computer is slow- much slower than when we first got it. Takes way longer to change web pages, etc now that when it was new, so I am thinking maybe there is something here I can't see that is slowing it all down.

Heres what I have going:

System:
Dell 8300
XP Media Edition (have sp2 installed)

Protection:
Adaware
Spyware Doctor
Zone Alarm Firewall

Malware programs installed:
Stinger
Hijack
aboutbuster
HSFix
CCleaner
fixiefts
hoster
filekicker
cwshredder
killbox
ewido (does not work on this computer)

OK, I think thats it. I do run Panda Activescan online check occasionally.

Yesterday I did the Panda Activescan and got rid of a few things, but could not get rid of the items marked as :

Adware:adware program Windows Registry

Adware:memorywatcher Windows Registry

Adware:adware/ddos Windows Registry

Here is my Hijack log:

Hi jewelergirl,

It's good you didn't follow the advice given by email as that can just cause confusion and other problems. It wasn't bad advice but a first step in one method of troublshooting and should have been posted in public so everyone can see what other steps need to be taken. Let's try a different method.

You don't have any serious malware showing in your log, but with all the tools you've used you still could have something hiding in areas that HijackThis doesn't look into. So i would like for you to run some more scans and fix what's there.

First tho could you tell me what else was happening on your PC besides slowness that caused you to install all that security software? Any strange popups? There are many causes for slowness. One thing recently that may be affecting you is a Windows update that clashes wih certain software and hardware drivers. That update was just reissued a few days ago to fix affected systems (we hope  ), so make sure you have all the latest before we proceed.

I'm going to ask that you remove MyWay--it's not so bad if you installed it yourself, but can slow down your PC. If it is something you use and like you can reinstall it later.

And finally, I would like for you to use Ewido. Since you say it won't work for you, I would like for you to uninstall it and try again and proceed with the following instructions.

Download and install the trial version of ewido security suite.
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
- Launch Ewido by double-clicking the desktop icon.
- You may get a message that the database could not be found. This is normal-- click the OK button.
- The program will now go to the main screen.
- On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
- Click on Start update.
- The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

IIf you are having problems with the updater, try the solutions on this page and let me know how it went:
http://www.ewido.net/en/support/?AID=26

Once the updates are installed close Ewido.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

Open Ewido and do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • If ewido detects an infected file click "Perform action on all infections"
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report.txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.

Please post the contents of the report.txt file in your next post. If still having problems getting ewido torun just skip this step and continue on.

Scan again with HijackThis 1.99.1. Put a checkmark by the following entries, double-checking to be sure that only these entries are checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

<--IMPORTANT NOTE: Only fix this if you have previously uninstalled Norton and this is a leftover (recent experience tells me it propbably is). If you haven't uninstalled Norton don't fix it and let me know.

Close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and then click the "Fix checked" button.

Using My Computer/WindowsExplorer, delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

Reboot back into norml mode and run Panda ActiveScann again. Please copy the log and post it back here.

Then scan again with HijackThis and post a fresh log in your next reply.

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

Hi Papakid,

Thanks so much for your response  !

I will do my best to answer in the order that you listed everything.

I did not take any of the steps outlined in the email I received, but took one piece of advice and removed Limewire using the add/remove programs in the control panel, as I don't use it anyway.

I don't think I have any other issues except the slowness right now. A few months ago I was running Norton as my only security and it somehow got turned off. Of course, I got a gazillion infections of all sorts. I found a forum that helps the technologically challenged such as myself and some real nice people helped me clean it all up. It was a lengthy process- about a week, to sort out. All the malware programs on my computer are residual from that (it took all of them to complete). I would have gone back to them, but my husband edited out bookmarks (deleting a bunch of addresses) and I do not remember the exact forum name.

Windows update- I hired a tech come to my home about 6 months ago after a fiasco with service pack 2- he installed that (SP2) so I know I at least have that much . A couple of months ago it was recommended to me to get "Rollup 2" to fix something (sorry I can't remember what that was for the life of me) and I was unable to manually download the update. To be honest I am not sure if I am getting the updates . I do have it set as automatic. When I go to the website and click to download and install the box pops up like it will work, but then it just sits there- no progress shows on the progress bar. I tried it again last night- let it sit for about 1/2 hour, and still no progress showed, so I cancelled it. :flowers: Not sure what to do with the windows update from here.

MyWay- I am not sure what or where MyWay is. It does not sound like anything I purposely downloaded, so am happy to delete it. I went to add/remove program in the control panel, but there is not program in there called MyWay. Can you tell me how to delete it?

Ewido- I removed and redownloaded it, then ran it in safe mode and it works great  - thanks!. Here are the logs:

OK, the log is looking better. Ewido is still not right tho, that's not a scan report but a status report. Are you sure you followed the directions exactly, this part?

Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.

I don't know what's goindg on for sure. Open ewido and look at the top left and see if the version is 3.5. If you installed the beta version 4.0 by mistake uninstall it and download 3.5 from this link: http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe

Then try running it again and let me know how it goes. You may be right that it won't run on your machine.

I prefer not to use automatic updates, especially for those on dialup, but to me it is better for everyone to monitor if the updates were successful. Besides malware can mess with the updater and if you don't keep an eye on the process you'll never know. You can sign up for security bulletins when new updates come out so you don't forget: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...tin/notify.mspx

You really need the latest updates, so let's try this. Go to Control Panel and click on the shield icon to open Security Center. Click on the Automatic Updates link and click to put a dot in the circle next to Turn off Automatic Updates. OK out then reboot the PC. Now open Internet Explorer and choose Tools>Windows Updates. Have some patience as you may need to download a new ActiveX and validating software. If you still get a blank screen, let me know, but if you're able to proceed, choose Custom scan and after your PC is scanned for needed updates, install all that are available.

There are some other things I would like to go over with you but I have to get off to work now. i don't like the way Panda is not describing well enough what it is finding that it won't clean. You seem to have some leftover reg entries so I wouldn't worry about it too much, but let's try a couple more online free scans and see if they will clean that up and maybe give some more information. Post the logs from these scans, please.

TrendMicro's HouseCall
Kaspersky OnLine

Let me know how all of this goes and don't hesitate to ask any questions.
