Started a few days ago, when awakening fromo screen saver/inactivity the toolbar is gone and nothing responds.  The mouse moves, I can click on an icon, it will darken and the curser goes to hourglass, but nothing happens.

Ctl/Alt/Del won't do anything, Windows key, nothing.

I end up holding the power button til it turns off, then hit it again to restart.

I first thought it was something in Firefox as I usually have it left open, but today it was just my normal desktop.

I run Boinc as my screensaver, I should perhaps disable that for a day or two and see it that makes any improvement.

This is a dell Opti GX620 4 G ram running XP Sp3, Zone Alarm and AVG.

Tried disabling screen saver by selecting 'None'

No improvement.

I will check other threads here to get the usual tools used to see what is happening 'under the hood' and see what I can learn.

You reflect installations of both AVG and ZoneAlarm AV...I suggest uninstalling everything connected with ZA.

You might also temporarily remove all browser add-ons.

I ran ZA for a great number of years, never a prob.  But I recently noticed they have included A/V.  I don't kow when that began so I just now turned that portion off.

Currently going thru the errors on startup and using MS knowledge Base to correct each.  Don't know it they are related to my lockups but it can't hurt to make those corrections.

I don't believe much in browser add ons, currently only have AdBlockPlus 2.3.2 and  Remember Passwords 1.1    both have been on FF a very long time.

FF has updated a # of times, now at 24.0

Please download and run JavaRA to remove all versions of Java, and then reinstall Java again.

Please download and run Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton Utilities.

Have you verified that your system drivers are all updated, and have you checked for recent BIOS updates to see if there are any that address your issue?

Turned off the A/V portion of ZA yesterday.  So far I have not had the re-occurence of the problem.

It may be too early yet, but I did leave FF open last night and it is working fine this morning.

Doubt that Norton is a problem, this is a paid version that I have used for a very long time.

I'll give it a few days, if all's well then I'll quit while I'm ahead.

Norton Utilities and anything related to Norton has been notorious for causing system issues, and quite honestly, I would just remove Zone Alarm and use Windows Firewall or your Router for security. Since each update to it will activate the virus scanner portion again.

It's been a few days now and NO  reoccurance of the problem.

So it appears the culprit was ZA's new A/V  combined with AVG causes my copy of XP to freeze when awakening from Boinc screensaver.

This is only a problem after the screensaver came on.

I do not allow anything to 'auto' update, I select what, when, and how updates are done, and always select 'Custom' install so I can see what they are attempting to 'cram' into my machine.

Now that I know ZA has added an A/V I will simply check to ensure it is still off after an update.

In my professional opinion and experience, I would just get rid of Zone Alarm and use just AVG for an Anti-Virus and use Windows Firewall or use your broadband router.  Zone Alarm has been notorious for hijacking a computer's resources much like Norton and McAfee are known to do.  All it will take is one file corruption in ZA before your computer becomes unable to connect to the net or do anything worth while.

My experience may be too limited to just my three machiiens, and those of my son, daughter, G'sons (2), and neighbors two machines, but  ZA is still running on my Win98 machine, since before 2000. I really don't remember what year I bought this Opti, but it runs XP with ZA and AVG since new. My laptop I do run Windows Firewall, and AVG, and it's also many years now.  All Dells.

I have had one hard drive failure, and one power pack failure, so far.  I have a backup pwer supply theat both mains run on.

I have heavily edited the reg's on all three and am pretty please with how they work, very solid and stable, usually left on 24//7 only shut down when an install or update requires.
