Every time someone sends me a word file attached in an email , it comes thru in Works. When that happens, any comments on the sidebar are automatically lost. I need to receive files in MS word, not works.

I tried to follow your instructions to change my default  to Word but when I try that, I do not see Word as an option , but I do see everything but that. I could sure use some help. I wondered what would happen if I deleted Works from my PC?

I am running Windows 7 with MS Word 10. I thank you for any assistance.

Works was discontinued in 2009. What instructions did you follow?

Works = Microsoft Works

The same ? has been asked on site before. I did everything mentioned but nothing worked.

I did buy MS Office suite with word at a cost of about $125.

So...are you saying that if I delete MS Works, MS Word will automatically be my default. I honestly don't see any other way to make it work.

....And thanks for your help. Things like this really P...S me off.

I think you saw my post before I edited it.

I'm not saying it will work if you delete Works because I don't know. It's worth a try. Since you bought Office there is no reason to keep Works, which was a very stripped down version of Office.

It may or may not make Word the default. If not you can try to change the file association again.

What's the point of having Works installed...if you have a validly installed MS Office bundle?

In any case...what program opens a file...is determined by what's reflected as the default for that file extension.

You can change the default by changing the file association for the .doc file extension.  See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/change-the-program-that-opens-a-type-of-file .

Of course...uninstalling Works removes the possibility of it being used to open any file, as long as Word is properly set as the default for the .doc extension.
