Hello,

Thank you in advance to anyone that tries to help.

I've been trying to fix my mums computer for a couple of weeks. It is quite old for a laptop, about 6 years old, It may just need replaced due to age but when its on it actually runs pretty decent. My problems began when trying to make it run faster as it was getting the eggtimer when trying ot do anything at all on it. It runs faster now after It completed a few scans and quarantined a few things, then all of a sudden started crashing when trying to run any scans at all. Ive tried to run chkdsk, & im not sure if this completes because when I've ran it its just before I've went to bed and its sitting at the log in screen when I get up in the morning. I've ran avast boot scan and thats crashed and any another type of scan malware or sfs /scannow crashes it even in safe mode. It crashes after about 5 minutes into the scans. Iv'e tried to run the online antivirus scanners but the laptops crashes with them too. The computer did have a problem trying to come out of hibernation due to WD security, this has been uninstalled now.

Any type of idea on what to do would be great as I am stumped.

I realise it could be a virus stopping the scans, but without the scans being able to run to remove it i have no idea what to do now.

Many thanks,

Nicola

Let's try the following, in an effort to get more data :)..

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

You have 1GB RAM installed...that's not very much for a system that does much of anything beyond surfing the Web.  !GB may have been fine in 2006, based on what a laptop was expected to do...but may not be sufficient for what you do today.

Please uninstall Advanced System Care...and Iobit Malware Fighter.

What is AOL Spyware Protection Service, why is it on your system?

What is McAfee Validation Trust Protection Service..why is it running?

Hi again!

My mum doesnt use it for much apart from the internet and storing photos, do you think I should install more Ram? I'm wondering if it would be better for her just to buy a new computer rather than starting to buy more parts for this one.

Ive never seen those programs installed on this computer in the windows add and remove programs or revo uninstaller, theres nothing at all under those names otherwise I would have uninstalled them, do you think they could be malware/viruses? If not could you tell me how do I go about uninstalling them please?

Thank you again,

Nicola

PS she's never been with AOL, so any software by them should not be on there. I'm not sure if shes ever had McAfee, so it could be a leftover from uninstalling it, I know its pretty hard to uninstall,

I'll head over to the McAfee site to use their uninstaller you need to download from them and google the AOL thing to see what the hell it is.

I'm uninstalling Advanced System Care and Iobit Malware just now, can I ask why you'd like me to do this? I've always found the System Care quite good!. Although I'm not the best at computer stuff, I do find it interesting and love learning about it, so it would be great to know for the future. I also use them on my own computer so I will get rid of them on that too if they're bad news.

Many thanks in advance

Nicola

Are you saying that there are no Iobit programs reflected in Add/Remove Programs?

The AOL process and the McAfee process could be orphans...left behind when the uninstall routines did not work properly...but the Iobit programs clearly are reflected as installed programs on your own data submission via MiniToolBox.

Sorry I wasn't very clear in my post - Iobit and Advanced System Care were both in Add Remove, it is the Mcafee and AOL that arent showing in either Add Remove or Revo Uninstaller, so Im not sure how to go about getting rid of them as they are not needed. Ive uninstalled IObit and Advanced System Care now, as you asked.

That's what I was hoping :), we can go forward.

Go to AutoRuns for Windows - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx .  On the right, in the column, you will see Run Autoruns now from Live.Sysinternals.com, click that.

Click Run...click Run.

There are many tabs reflected, go to the one listed as Logon. click it.

Take a screen shot of it, post same in your next post.  Be sure that the screen reflects all of the items on the Logon tab before taking the screenshot.

How To Capture And Edit A Screen Shot. - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43088.html, the method suggested by Andrew may be easiest.

Hello again,

sorry for the delay, I've attached the image of the screenshot of Logons from Auoruns.

I did remove a few start up entries through Spybot a couple of days ago, I did this long after the problem of the computer crashing during scans though, so deleting them didnt cause the crashing problem. They were strange entries about HP ink. There is still a couple remaining. I can post a screenshot from Spybot if you like.

Many thanks for you help

Nicola

Nothing there that I would bother checking, although there is no need for some of the listed processes to run from boot.

Please take another Speccy Snapshot and post the link to it.

Louis
