When I start MS word 2003 Bold and Underline are showing as already set and I have to click onto B and U to get normal typing. This also happens when I click on enveopes the font is bold and underlined and I don't know where to go to get normal typing. This only started happening two days ago for no apparent reason.

I would be pleased if someone can help.

Delete 'normal.dot' in templates and restart Word - it will be recreated. Sometimes it's as simple as that, rather than looking at 'Detect and Repair' or reinstalling. Presumably you have run scans for malware, viruses, etc. just in case.

Found 'templates and add ins" but there is no 'normal dot'. Am I looking in the wrong place?

On my Desktop computer, XP Home, SP3, with Office Pro Edition 2003 installed, the location is:
C:\Documents and Settings\-YourName-\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\normal.dot

If it doesn't match your system, you can search for the file. If you don't like Windows search, try this one, it's very good:

Everything  (free)

Just looking at my install, there is another option to try re Toolbars.

Right click by the side of the Menu/Toolbars - choose customise - choose Options -
choose 'Reset Menu and Toolbar Usage Data'.  Or, Tools/Customise, same thing.

@petewills

I had  problems dowmloading 'Everything' but eventually was successful. Found 'normal.dot, deleted and problem solved. I am really grateful for your help and follow throughs. To say 'you've made my day' is putting it mildly.

Many thanks
