Hello folks,

Just went to MS to get newest DirectX end user runtime updates that were released 4/06/06. Downloaded and installed fine, maybe 25-30 MB, but at the final moment, after 100% installed -> (paraphrase) "Error: Failed to install. Look in DxError.log or DirectX.log in Windows folder for explanation."

I have no DxError.log or DirectX.log in Windows folder or anywhere else that I can find using "explore" or "search". I checked dxdiag, says everything is working OK.

Could someone who has downloaded the latest DX update take a look in your dxdiag, check the version number and let me know what it says? Mine says Version 9.0c-(4.09.0000.0904). Also, if you are willing to look through the file list, would you note the name and date of the most recent file(s), again, that is if you have downloaded this latest update? The most recent file in my DX file list is "quartz.dll: 6.05.2600.2749 English Final Retail 8/30/2005 05:54:26 1287168 bytes". If you have downloaded the latest updates, I assume their release dates are much more recent (like 4/06/06?) than mine.

Actually, far more important than the version number and release date info, would be someone who has experience dealing with DirectX update problems and has some insight into what's going on here... since I know almost nothing about this stuff. Could one of the folks here provide a suggestion to solve this, or direct me to somewhere/someone that might help? Other than MS tech help (lately, that's an oxymoron if there ever was one). Or let me know what info they'll want if I do have to go to MS for help.

Thanks for a prompt response.

Rob

Oh, yes, I did try downloading the updates 2 more times. Same result.

Hi brillo.
The Dx log files are hidden unless you have "Show Hidden Files and Folders" selected and "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" deselected.
Open windows explorer and click Tools>Folder Options>View tab to get there.
Without viewing the log files, there's no way to tell were the problem is.
On the DX files tab in DXDiag, under "notes", does it say "no problems found"?
When installing or updating DX, you always want hardware acceleration set to full as well.

Go to Microsoft Update
Click on "Review your update history"

When the list populates look for the update in question

Review your Update History
If an update failed to install, click the Failed icon to learn how to solve the problem.

Note: To remove an update, go to Add and Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

Thanks HitSquad and Enthusiast for your responses.

Below is my DXError.log, (with many repeats of same) followed by the pertinent sections (beginning and end of download log, install log) of DirectX.log. If someone understands this, could you give me some idea what is happening here and direct me toward a solution if possible? As you can see, DirectX.log shows all updates loaded and installed, then failed at very end.

I requested MS online assistance at 16:50 on 04/25, via COMPMAIL@MICROSOFT.COM. Whatever that is, all automated now, it pulled something out of my comp, logs I assume, with an activex. Autoresponse said reply in 24 hours. No response so far after 45 hours.

I don't like this. I play Flight Simulator 2004 a lot and consider DirectX updates important to good performance. Is there a phone number that gets you to a real person at MS for help on this specific update issue? This is nearly new Dell I6000. Whose responsibility is something like this? They (Dell/MS) have punted me back and forth in the past.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you remove the updates before trying to reinstall them?

Thanks Enthusiast,

DirectX does not show up in my add remove programs list, or at least I can not find it. Does someone know where it would be?

Also, this "The DirectX runtime cannot be uninstalled."
from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...en&Hash=LN6R44C

Enthusiast suggested I remove the updates, then reinstall. Isn't remove the same as uninstall? If so, apparently I can not do that. If not the same thing, I'm back to, "DirectX does not show up in my add remove programs list, or at least I can not find it. Does someone know where it would be?"

What now?

The download is no good. Delete it and go back to Microsoft and download a new one

Get the latest DirectX Here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx

Remember to delete the old file if you can and then download this one and install it. Windows Update should see this one and ignore the update.

The link ThorXP suggested is where I went originally to get the update. Have tried that twice, same outcome. Also again, note, "The DirectX runtime cannot be uninstalled."
from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...en&Hash=LN6R44C

Apparently I can not uninstall these runtimes nor can I overwrite them. Does it make sense to download the DX redist package at 50+ MB (versus the update at 24MB) and then manually install the runtimes? Might that work? Should that work?

I obviously don't know what 'm talking about here. Just a thought.

I have trouble occasionally with this site responding also. I have high speed internet, but it makes no difference. The site does not always respond fast.

Sorry I have not updated since my last post on 4/27/06. Was waiting for Resonse from Jennifer Yang, Microsoft Windows Update Support Professional, "Satisfied customers are my #1 priority!". Go to green text at end if you want to skip history.

Brief History: On 4/25/06, two Windows XP updates installed successfully. Windows Defender Beta2 Update 1.14.1408.8 downloaded but failed to complete installation. Later that same day, Directx 9.0c End User Runtime Update installer dxwebsetup.exe (~800KB) from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&displaylang=en&Hash=8PF5LRB
downloaded, then the installer automatically downloaded the necessary DX9 EURTs (~25 MB) and installed them to 100%. Just before completion -> ERROR: Installation failed.

At 16:50 on 4/25/06, I requested MS online assistance via COMPMAIL@MICROSOFT.COM.

On 4/29/06 I received a response from Jennifer Yang, Microsoft Windows Update Support Professional, "Satisfied customers are my #1 priority!". Jennifer acknowledged that she understood both Update download/install problems, "I understand that the windows defender update 1.14.1408.8 and the DirectX end user run-times failed to be downloaded and installed for 3 times while two other Windows updates installed successfully." She provided a troubleshooting procedure for ONLY the Windows Defender Update problem. It worked. She did not mention anything more about the DX9 EURT Update problem in that response.

I responded on 5/01/06, telling her the WDB2 problem was fixed, thanked her for her help, and repeated my request for help with the DX9 EURT update problem. I sent along all the info from the DirectX.log and DXError.log files.

Jennifer responded on 5/04/06 stating, "Please understand that the installer issue is related to the Windows System rather than Windows Update. We provide support for Windows Update issues and our Windows XP issues are directly handled by Windows XP Support Team. I suggest that we'd better submit a new case so that the right Support Professional can work with you closely in the most timely and efficient manner. Please submit additional support questions by creating a new incident at the Online Support site. For your convenience I have included the link:Http://support.microsoft.com/select/default.aspx?target=assistance&c1=509 Please select the appropriate product."

I responded on 5/05/06 stating, "I wish you had told me up front that you were not the appropriate person to work with on the DirectX update problem. I would not have gathered and sent all the information to you. I could have had the problem resolved by now. Instead, a week is lost and I'm now back at step one with this problem."

"Please tell me the appropriate product to select from the list on the link page you provided. I ask you this because the Microsoft products I have do not appear to be listed. My OS is Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. That product is not listed on the page you directed me to. I have Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. That product is not listed on the page you directed me to. I have Microsoft DirectX 9.0 (the one of most concern here). That product is not listed on the page you directed me to."

I await a response from Jennifer.

Also, as of 5/03/06, if I try to download the DX EURT Update installer, dxwebsetup.exe, the result is now:

This (code stuff?) goes on for almost 1 MB. I have no idea what is going on with this. Anyone have a suggestion of where to go from here? Or should I just wait for Jennifer to respond?

Please recall: I can not uninstall these runtimes nor do I think I can I overwrite them, see http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&displaylang=en&Hash=8PF5LRB bottom of page. Does it make sense to download the DX redist package at 50+ MB (versus the update at 24MB) and then manually install the runtimes? Might that work? Should that work?

Thanks for suggestions to solve the DX9 EURT Update problem.

One line from the above may be why you are having a problem:

"Please free up some space and try again"

How much space do you have available on the drive?
