winvnc.exe killing my Win7 machine???

Months ago my computer started taking longer and longer to boot up.  The desktop would come up fine, but the connecting to the internet took forever, timed today at more than 4 minutes.  Today I had a new symptom - when I tried to boot up, I received an error saying "BOOTMGR NOT FOUND."  I was able to get into the settings and discovered that it was trying to boot from one of my external drives, which are used for backups.  I have no idea why this would change!!  I switched the order, then was able to get on.  It's definitely going from bad to worse fast!

 

My machine info is:

Windows 7 Home Premium, version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

I have a Vizio Router (which I removed from the loop to see if it was a bottleneck).  Modem is now hardwired to CPU via Ethernet cable.

 

I use Norton for anti-virus and firewall and a full scan showed no problems.

 

I downloaded new MalwareBytes and it found no problems.

 

I downloaded new SpyBot Search&Destroy and it found no problems.

 

I downloaded MiniToolBox (per Louis) - Here is a fresh run of it:

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.

  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.


If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

I couldn't get to the internet at all this morning (everything said Page Not Found), so I found the winvnc exe that Louis had seen, and renamed it to winvnc.yikes.  I'm now able to get to BP and go through the info gathering you requested.

I'm kind of freaking out about a couple of things:

 

One - when I needed to reboot...I once again got the BOOTMGR MISSING message.  It again was trying to boot from a CD-ROM drive, and the Harddrive was listed as 2nd.  As before, I switched them, but got the same message.  I then used F5 to LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS, and it again showed the CD-ROM drive in the first position.  I switched them again, and was able to boot.  I don't know what will happen the next time it needs to reboot!  How can I get the right defaults to stay in place?

 

Two - I did not realize that one of these things would delete my Favorites, my Shortcuts, and the most serious....Outlook.  If I go into Program Files/Microsoft Office there are a couple of txt files, and it looks like my whole installation is gone.  This is a major critical problem for me - my husband relies on this for his work.  How do I go about fixing this asap?  Am I looking in the right place?  aaaccckkk - I'm sorry but I'm in full-fledged panic mode.

The ESET is still running....slowly.

 

I'm in big trouble.  I did a "Switch User" to log into the Administrator Account - and there is NOTHING there except a desktop background picture.  No toolbar.  Absolutely nothing.  The only thing I could do was control/alt/delete to switch back to the User Account.  Could the whole account be gone??  And it turns out that my whole Office Suite is gone - Word, Excell...everything.

 

I honestly have NOT done anything else on the machine today (except check email earlier) other than what you requested.  Do you know what might have happened?   Do you have any miracles for me??

12 hours of scanning later...ESET detected no malicious software.

 

Before I go back to the Win7 forum ... can you address the winvnc services that caused Hamluis in that forum to send me here in the first place.  Should they be running?  I have seen improved browsing effects when it hasn't been executing, and my missing programs happened well after I'd renamed the file, and I don't know what it 'would' be doing if it was running.

 

Also, do routers get malware?  My router has been off-line since the testing began, to try to narrow down the problem of browsing being so slow and/or hanging (which was my original problem when I asked BC for help).

If the issue is gone since you renamed the file I wouldn't worry too much about it.

However I'd like to make sure it's not running there...

 

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Also, I did a restore on my system from just prior to running these diagnostic utilities, and I now have all my "stuff" back, including the Office Suite and Outlook and Favorites and such.  Don't know why they went missing, but a huge sigh of relief that they're back. 

 

I'm assuming that since all the checks came back as 'no malware' this should be acceptable.  If not, please let me know. 

 

Is there anything special I should do to know if the router is infected?  Like, would MalwareBytes see it during a scan when I hook it back up?  Or a different tool?

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

If you don't know how to do it...

2. Make sure Windows Updates are current.

3. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

4. Check if your browser plugins are up to date.
Firefox - https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
other browsers: https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ (click on "Launch a quick scan now" link)

5. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

6. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

7. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC), AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool (JRT) weekly.

8. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

9. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

10. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.
